KUFA, Iraq (Reuters) - Spanish-led troops and Iraqi police fought a three-hour gun battle with Shi'ite militiamen near Najaf that left 20 Iraqis and four Salvadoran soldiers dead Sunday, witnesses and medical officials said.

In Baghdad, clashes between U.S. soldiers and Shi'ites killed at least one Iraqi and wounded many. As night fell, fighting continued in the poor Sadr City district as locals set two Humvees ablaze and hid behind walls waiting to fire rockets.

The shooting in Najaf began after protesting militiamen marched on a Spanish-run military base in Kufa, near Najaf, to denounce the arrest of an aide to a radical Shi'ite cleric and the closure by U.S. officials of a militant Baghdad newspaper.

In a statement from Madrid, Spain's Defense Ministry said four soldiers from El Salvador (news - web sites), fighting alongside the Spanish, had been killed and nine wounded.

2. it wasn't so much a battle as a massacre
The occupation forces and their collaborators fired on the demonstration, it was only then that the latter fired back. It has taught those on the ground a valuable lesson, that such paths are a futile act and that the hands of the invaders cannot be anything but forced.

3. Sadr has a bright future
as our bogeyman du jour, joining the illustrious ranks of Khomeini, Qaddafi, and Saddam. He's an impressive contender, seeing how he's managed to magically convert en masse the secular SADDAM LOYALISTS who were giving Bushco heartburn into RADICAL RELIGIOUS JIHADISTS. Remarkable achievement, remarkable man.

4. For Sadr's next feat, he will turn to geometry
Transforming the way evil Sunni traingle north and west of Baghdad to the way radical Shi'a quadrangle to the south of Baghdad.

A magician and geometer of first order, this radical jihadist.

I wonder whether our media mavens here in the US ever lose any sleep, or whether they are thoroughly immune to any dignity whatsoever.

7. the Boston massacre-deja vu
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 12:43 PM by rfkrocks
a colonial power with the top military in the world tries to pacify a city and an unruly group of people living in that nation-the natives throw ice and snowballs at the troops who return fire and kill those in the crowd-bingo presto-the American revolution-now we see the Iraqis revolution-Bushco has managed to repeat the mistake of Boston 1775 -we are doomed to lose Iraq-we have no plan and not enough troops and it is a year too late and all the parties are getting in position for their independence day 6/30-what will happen if we turn power over to the "governing" counsel? More revolution-what a disaster-FUBAR of the worst type cobbled from ignorant unlearned leaders of our country-Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his grave "Good neighbor to all nations-entangling foreign alliances with none" Did anyone in Bush's cabinet ever read our history or even Colin Powell and Schwartzkopf's book about why invading Iraq was bad? Everyday I can only shake my head-what is Bushco gets another 4years?
