I need negatives on Colin Powell?
It is well-known that Powell has made himself a stooge for the Bush administration, but I need some points that can be used in a discussion with my Republican brother. I know Powell lied to the U.N. Security council about Iraq having WMDs. I know he also lied about the Iraqi trailers, saying that they were used to manufacture chemical WMDs? Further, I know that he helped Bush promote the bogus "Coalition of the Willing." What am I missing?

5. Powell refused to send APCs to Somalia...
The whole diasaster of "Black Hawk Down" that Freepers love to blame on Clinton was due to Powell's ineptness as Chief of Staff.

6. How much more does your brother need
Was the investigating officer in the My Lai massacre, and assisted in white washing the initial investigation.

He counselled President Clinton and then Les Aspin into not sending any armor to assist the troops in Somalia.

And he never commanded American troops in combat, his first tour in Vietnam he commanded ARVN soldiers, and he was a Divisional staff officer during his second tour.

7. He helped cover up atrocities in Viet Nam including My Lai
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 02:07 PM by JohnyCanuck
Note that he was not directly responsible for investigating My Lai but he was put in charge of investigating reports from a US GI, Tom Glen, that he had witnessed numerous situations in which atrocities were comitted by US troops on civilians and POWs. This was not long after the My Lai incident and while Glen didn't bring up My Lai in his complaint, he said later that he had heard of the My Lai incident from a 2nd hand report. So it's fairly certain rumours about what went on at My Lai were making the rounds when Powell was doing his investigation. Maj. Powell issued a whitewash report which denied Glen's charges and said everything was hunky dory with US treatment of Viet Namese civilians.

Glen's letter contended that many Vietnamese were fleeing from Americans who "for mere pleasure, fire indiscriminately into Vietnamese homes and without provocation or justification shoot at the people themselves." Gratuitous cruelty was also being inflicted on Viet Cong suspects, Glen reported.

"Fired with an emotionalism that belies unconscionable hatred, and armed with a vocabulary consisting of 'You VC,' soldiers commonly 'interrogate' by means of torture that has been presented as the particular habit of the enemy. Severe beatings and torture at knife point are usual means of questioning captives or of convincing a suspect that he is, indeed, a Viet Cong...

<snip>

The letter's troubling allegations were not well received at Americal headquarters. Maj. Powell undertook the assignment to review Glen's letter, but did so without questioning Glen or assigning anyone else to talk with him. Powell simply accepted a claim from Glen's superior officer that Glen was not close enough to the front lines to know what he was writing about, an assertion Glen denies.

After that cursory investigation, Powell drafted a response on Dec. 13, 1968. He admitted to no pattern of wrongdoing. Powell claimed that U.S. soldiers in Vietnam were taught to treat Vietnamese courteously and respectfully. The Americal troops also had gone through an hour-long course on how to treat prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions, Powell noted.

Under Clinton, he refused to send requested mech forces ...
to Somalia (as requested by the top commander in Somalia). Then the Rangers got ambushed, and 10th Mountain was stuck using Humvees to try to evacuate the Rangers. Just one mech battalion (i.e. Bradleys or tanks) would have made a big difference. But Colin refused.
Of course, after the Ranger ambush, the pentagon sent a mech brigade (three battalions) to Somalia.

8. He snubbed Clinton when Big Dog asked him to stay after GW 1
Rightly or wrongly many people believe him to be some sort of bipartisian fair individual. So he makes up some bullshit about wanting to retire from government. Flash forward 8 years the same old crooks are in power giving him a promotion to the now discredited position of Sec. of State and throwing in some crony/nepotism by giving his idiot son a job at the FCC.

The facts speak for themeselves, and go straight to the so called character of the man.

13. hey! don't forget Iran Contra
he helped sell missiles to Iran, helicopters to Iraq

then helped cover the whole thing up, too!

"We need you, Colin," the familiar voice of new national security adviser Frank Carlucci pleaded over the phone in December 1986. "This is serious. Believe me, the presidency is at stake."

With those words, Colin Powell re-entered the Iran-contra affair, a set of events he had dangerously advanced in January 1986 when he arranged missile deliveries to Iran, while keeping Pentagon colleagues in the dark. But just as Powell played an important behind-the-scenes role in those missile shipments, he would be equally instrumental in the next phase, the scandal's cover-up in 1987-88. His skillful handling of the media and Congress would earn him the gratitude of Reagan-Bush insiders and lift Powell into the upper echelon of Republican powerbrokers.

Powell's actions nearly a decade ago also have fresh relevance today as the retired general steps forward as the popular politician-statesman vouching for Bob Dole's "character and competence." The documentary record -- some of it recently declassified at the request of The Consortium -- reveals disturbing new questions about Colin Powell's own "character and competence," including clear discrepancies in his sworn testimony.

and this, about the helicopters

sound familiar?

amazing that these things get not one BIT of media play.

Parry, of course, is the real, actual reporter who first brought Ollie North to the world's attention, broke the most important aspects of Iran Contra, then got FIRED for his efforts
