I haven't seen anything anywhere on this topic.

Arnold was supposed to go in and clean up the mess. Has this happened? Is he doing a good job?

2. no, but in fairness I can't say that it's all Ahnold's fault....
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 03:44 PM by mike_c
We have a dysfunctional legislature and an executive legacy that pretty much guaranteed a meltdown sooner or later. And a highly polarized population. The energy trader's rape of CA ratepayers might have stripped away the curtain, but the ugly truth was behind it all along.

Arnold won't be able to "fix" much, but neither would Davis have been, and nor would another dem gov, IMO.

4. well, then, this needs to come to light, right?
Arnold was sold as a savior who would fix the failures of a democratic governor.

If he is not living up to what he promised, shouldn't this be exposed - not matter if its not his fault?

5. And what kind of government will fix it if not Dem?
We all know that installing the Arnold sockpuppet into the governorship of California by the Bush administration was a power move by the neo-cons. I think the thing that will fix California will be to split it into two or even three states. The most conservative state can have Arnold if they like and the rest of us can start fresh with a new governor elected honestly and without contrivance.

12. personally, I don't think CA's problems can be fixed...
...in any long-term sense without a pretty clean sweep of the legislature and a massive overhaul of state law, in particular a re-examination of referendum mandated legislation. One suggestion-- voter referenda should automatically expire after some reasonable period of time so that the social effects of things like Proposition 13 can be reconsidered.

13. This is what would happen if you created more states out of one.
New Constitutions and laws would have to be drafted, new legislators elected and a fresh start so to speak.

3. Nope.. he "settled" the Enron suit..(for pennies)
we're getting a tax increase

we borrowed money

I got a "refund" for my car registration ($25.00)...BUT I did not PAY the RAISED amount.. I renewed before the increase went into effect, so if I got an undeserved refund, you can be sure that millions of others did too..and a lot more than $25...

he never "answered" the charges about the fondling stuff (no biggie..I knew he never would, anyway)

we will be seeing waaaaaaaay more of * than we deserve to see..

the stage is being set for a "squeeker victory" for * in Nov.:(

14. and the worst part???? His "re-election" is in only TWO years
and WHO are we building up NOW to run against him???... Beuller??? Beuller???? </crickets chirping>

We haev GOT to get busy and find someone who is going to be able to run against him.. He had a very truncated "campaign", and actually spent very little.. You can bet that he is stockpiling money like crazy, and is prepared to WOW us in 2006...

A Bustamante(blew it this time around) or Feinstein (too old-boring) will not engender any real challenge against Conan..

They have successfully "assassinated" Davis, so his support is meaningless now...

RIGHT NOW is when we need to get someone onboard and start getting them ready , or we will be stuck with PeteWilson Ahhhhnold until 2010.. Imagine the damage to the state... We cannot afford it.

21. Ahhnold won't help * in CA
They're just too differant ideologically to complement each other. What happened in October is not a rejection of the Democrats, but a rejection of Gray Davis, who, to be honest, was a lousy Governor. BTW, most polls show Kerry with a 2000-like lead over *, except for one from the RW Hoover Institution, which showed Kerry winning by 5-6% a month ago.

22. You are forgetting about the DREs..
If the polling says that "oooh it's soooo close"...or "* is gaining strength in CA", and then the machines are tweaked (with NO way to recount), we are SCREWED...

Look for * to suddenly open the purse strings in August or Sept, and give Ahhhnold some credit for it.. The papers will be all over it.. smiling people will be all over the tv, saying how thankful they are and what a good guy * is..

26. You are correct.. We are in for a rough election
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 05:06 PM by SoCalDem
no matter what we do.. We asked for the "briar patch"...and I fear we have gotten it :(

Instead of demanding "new machines", we should have demanded that we use PAPER..universally, and just use all those Billions of dollars to hire more PEOPLE and rent more polling places..

We were too ready to go with "new and improved"..and they gave us just what we "asked for"... No one bothered to research just WHO MAKES THESE MACHINES..and who OWNS THE CODES..

Now we have spent so much money, we will be pilloried if we protest..

It's like calling the cops on your abusive spouse, only to find out that the chief of police is their Dad, the prosecutor is their brother, and the judge is their Mom.:(

28. That's my POINT.. The POLLS will be "tightened" before the election
as COVER for the results..and the media reports will start to show a "close" race...before the election.. If the papers say it's close, the polls say it's close, and you cannot verify, just HOW will we ever know for sure :(

go here: www.arnoldwatch.org to keep up with his latest moves.

17. Saw only one "real" article, but the 9 BILLION $ from ENRON alone
has now "morphed" into 3.3 Billion from NINETY suppliers.. and how hard do you think that Ahhhnold will "push" for the money to be paid?? I think, to date, NONE has actually reached us..

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/national/8209272.htm

QUESTION: How much of the court- awarded debt owed to the state by Enron and other electricity suppliers that overcharged the state has been repaid to California and by which companies? – Mary Hardy, Huntington Beach

ANSWER: That money sure would be a relief right now with a looming $17 billion deficit.

Alas, none of the $3.3 billion that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ordered 90 energy suppliers to repay to California in energy overcharges has rolled in yet.

Even if it did, the money would make no difference in the state budget.

It is true that between January and June 2001, the state used its general fund to buy $6.1 billion worth of energy. But the state has since November 2002 been repaid, with interest, using energy bonds authorized by the Legislature.

Now, it is ratepayers that are paying the price for high- priced contracts.

If the money from energy companies started trickling in now from the likes of Duke Energy, Dynegy Inc., Mirant Corp. and Reliant Energy, the benefit would mainly be seen by ratepayers.

The state, however, has sought to recover some of the $9 billion to $15 billion it believes it was overcharged by going directly to some energy marketers.

Williams and El Paso Corp. have each settled with the state for $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion, respectively. Other companies, such as Calpine and Allegheny Energy Inc., agreed to renegotiate power contracts with the state for lower rates to make up for the overcharges, said Erik Saltmarsh, acting executive director with the state's Energy Oversight Board.

For questions about the state budget, please call (949) 465-5404 or red-ink@ocregister.com

He is a con artist of the highest order!

Nothing that I can see is better accept his chances of being big time in the Repub party. And, using his name to push California voters to be really stupid in '04 and do what Aaarold wants them to do and vote for *.

He is a dangerous man!

I can't believe the voters of California would be this stupid.
