LTTE from Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Bush Supporter No More
The letter is short so I'll print in its entirety, sorry if this is a prob?

(4/5/04)
Bush has lost a supporter

My son is fighting a losing battle in Iraq.

I have been a Republican since I was old enough to vote, and being a native Texan, I have backed the Bush family as faithfully as I have enjoyed the tax cuts for the wealthy -- but it is time to exercise sensibility and logic and demand that we bring our soldiers home.

I asked my son on the eve of his deployment to Iraq if Canada was an option for him. He said the government might eventually pardon him but that he could never pardon himself, and he kissed me goodbye and got on the plane.

Call me un-American. Call me the newest Democrat. Just call me and tell me to pick my son up at the airport. When he joined the military against my will, I reminded myself that you cannot want for others what they do not want for themselves. Apparently, the majority of Iraqi people do not want democracy. Bring our soldiers home.

1. The majority of the Iraqi people do want democracy
It's the minority that doesn't that causes all the problems.

2. The majority of Iraqis don't want "our form" of Democracy...
aka corporatism and occupation of sovereign states for the pillage of their natural resources.

And somebody send this writer's son home NOW.

4. The majority of Iragis
want what they decide they want. We cannot, and most probably should not try, to force them to do something they are not willing, interested, able, and/or allowed, to do. If we start talking "democracy for the Middle East" we are playing right into the logic that put us there, and * has won the debate. The right of a people to SELF-determination is one of the most fundamental reasons why the "pre-emptive", "unprovoked", and thus "illegal" war against Irag is totally wrong. We do not simply go into another country and tell them what is best for them. If they truly attack us first, it is war (e.g., Japan in WWII). If not, then it is a sovereign state and must be treated that way, no matter who is in charge!

3. the notion that the war was being waged to bring democracy to the
Iraqi people was a false premise to begin with.

we have got to stop brainwashing our young people to think that the US way of life is the way of life for anyone , anywhere in the world that we decide has a bad leader and needs to be invaded, at the cost of ten thousand or more of it's civilian population

That is not , it is for certain, anyway to bring "democracy" to a country we deem "needs" it.

Do not let your children become soldiers inthe military--because all they will and can be used for in the future, is conquest and questing for empire under false pretenses, in order to make these peach fuzzed soldiers believe they are defending our "freedoms" or bringing our form of "democracy" to those who an evil man decides has stuff we want and need--so that country needs our soldiers to kill in order to bring this "democracy" to the country.

It is a farce. It is willful murder. Do not let your children become a part of it. There is NOTHING glamorous or even "brave" about it.

5. Note the sad irony of this letter. Writer is apparently a well-off native
Texan. Happy to fatten at the trough while it was good. When her flesh and blood decides to join the military and then is selected to feed the war machine, it's like "WTF?! When we said the war was righteous and good, I meant for POOR people to fight in, not YOU!"

Sad, but I'll take the vote.

7. well, Im glad I dont have the guilt of voting for Bush on my mind
when they took Michael to Iraq Id already marched 3 times in DC against this bloodbath.
I cant imagine what its like for a mom to see her son go off to Iraq knowing full well she voted that monkey in.
Must be awful.
Now, lets get the draft going to wake up the rest of the American populace. Maybe they will get off their hands and out of in front of their TVs and learn what its like to go thru the hell I go thru every day.

9. Voting for ... Someone Else
I turned 18 right before Bush the First was elected and participated heavily with local Dems. in opposing him. For several years I kind of walked around with head-hung mentality whenever the subject of who I'd first voted for came up -- rare topic of conversation, but still.

The only thing I'll give * is that he's removed that. I now proudly say I have never voted for a plant.

10. Maybe more will be able to admit they were wrong...

She seems to be admitting that she was wrong. That takes more courage than most of our leaders have at the moment.

I don't want to see you go through that hell every day, Mari. Last thing I want to see is more mothers and dads going through it. Surely there's another way?

11. I dunno, Ive been attacked enough in this small GOP town
for being anti war, even with a kid in Baghdad. It would serve them right to go thru what we are going thru now. and I will never ever forgive them.

12. Typical repug......
everything was fine and dandy till her dear little boy went off to war instead of the low-lifes that mowed her lawn. Tough shit for her and her little boy, now she can see how the other half lives.

13. I welcome anyone to the Dem party for whatever reason.
Some of the coments here on DU do nothing for our ultimate goal of motivating ex * voters to come to our side. When people humble themselves for whatever reason to respond to them by kicking them in the teeth does nothing for your cause, in this case my cause too getting rid of the *. I sure hope that nobody looks at some of these responses and says "typical Democrat"
