Teaching Them How to "Support Our Troops"
I live in a military town and enjoy a certain notoriety as an antiwar activist. Imagine my surprise hen I got the following email from an officer's wife at Ft. Bragg.

I think I need your help. We have a soldier from our unit that was horrifically injured in Iraq. He is now medically retired in Pennsylvania and having the worst time.....guess it's all hitting him at once. He comes from a very dysfunctional background and his family isn't well equipped to deal with his issues. Can you help steer me towards some veterans groups, disabled vet groups, etc? I'd really like to find some organizations that might be able to provide him with services - maybe even one that offers scholarships for job re-training. Anything you can think of. This kid is 20 years old, blind, lost part of one leg, some hearing loss and has had 26 surgeries so far......

I realize that we don't agree on all issues but....I know you love soldiers like I do. Can you help me?

When folks from that side have to ask folks from our side questions like these, you have to know the war is in trouble at home and abroad.

1. I hope you can help this poor man
and if not, ask around here. Maybe there's something *WE* can do.

This could be a perfect teaching moment. It's opportunity to show some people what you/we are really about, and it's not anti-Americanism or being against the troops.

Let us know if you need some assistance

3. On Nancy
Nancy Lessin (and Charley Richardson) read this letter standing in my front yard on March 19 when they were here to speak at the antiwar demo I organized outside of Ft. Bragg.

I'm the MFSO contact person for Ft. Bragg!

8. My stepson in Baghdad hates Bush so do many in his unit
as do my other sons, including my oldest who just got out of the Guard. He detests Bush. All of them got their voters registration cards, they have been awakened by what they saw done to their stepbrother and they are pisssssedddd offfff.

7. I'm sure you can hook him up...
That officer's wife sounds like she might not be as "Stepford" as they like 'em to be.

If both sides can come together for a common cause like this, maybe it ain't all lost.
