Why does Costco carry so many RW authors?
Edited on Mon Apr-05-04 09:01 PM by Catshrink
I just ran out to get the new Dean book. All I saw were Hannity, Karen Hughes, Bernard Goldberg, and some other liberal-media bashing bull. No Clarke, no Dean, no Franken, no one even tilting left -- or center for that matter. WTF? I thought Costco was a democratic supporter so why do they stock only RW-Freeper crap?

edited. grammar again.

1. Because unlike Sams Club
it doesn't believe in censorship.

3. Bulk buying
It's cheaper that way. They don't get a discount for liberal books because people actually read them

4. MAYBE IT IS BECAUSE
the Clarke and Franken books sold so well that they are all gone....Maybe Deans book hasn't reached the store yet.....

5. Actually cheap books are remainders, or those books that
didn't sell too well when first published. They are then resold at a bargain rate. I think it might tell you something about right wing authors. Most of those who follow the the biblical repukes, don't do a lot of reading.

6. I buy all of my liberal books at Costco.
They had Richard Clarke last week but not this week. I think they must have sold out.

13. Yes, I also buy a lot of things at Costco.
Edited on Mon Apr-05-04 09:35 PM by Cleita
However, Costco isn't Sam's Club.

On edit: I didn't mean that Sam's Club is better. I was saying that Costco has to keep it's prices down too.

7. I bought "Lies..." and "American Dynasty" at Costco...
But there was also Hannity, Karen, and John Stossel crap there, too. I think they're pretty even-handed.

But I always make a point of turning the neocon books over and then covering them up with other crap like recipe books and stuff. It's mildly cathartic, if not immature.

9. I've wondered the same thing
Then, last week, I finally saw Richard Clarke's book at Costco. There were only a few copies left. However, they still had the same tired copies of the right-wing rags that have been there for months. Usually, no one is looking at them. Ha.

And, let me go on record as saying I LOVE COSTCO! They rock.

11. So do exterminators
One once told me the wholesale clubs are causing a big boom in business for exterminators. Cockroaches in everything.
I only buy things there in sealed packages now!

10. They had TWO tall stacks of Clarke's book today..
I bought one $14.99.. They did also have Hannity and some of the others.. I don't expect a store to "lock out" books of ANY kind.. As long as ALL are represented :)

12. Books
I do not set foot anymore in Sams or Wal Mart, but in the past I noticed they never carried any liberal authors or those who were critical of Bush. I think they get the RW books because they get bought up in bushels to get them onto the best selling list, and they have to dump em somewhere. They can't even give the rags away (like some of the websites will give you Coulter's book for free if you buy something from them).

Only two copies left. Obviously, people are doing some serious thinking. Lot's of Left Behind books on the shelf though...

25. I have much the same experience with Walmarts
At the "Books" section, there were about ten stacks of Hannity's book (you know, the one with the creepy picture of him in frnot of the American flag on the cover).

I ended up taking copies of TIME magazine that were laying around and covering Hannity's books with them. The cover was something like "Will we ever get out of Iraq?" with a picture of a GI.

14. Noticed the same at the local Kroger
But I think they sell the funny, liberal ones.

They might sell Hannity's book if they put it next to the toilet paper.

23. Never saw a copy of Hillary's book but "Jesus is back" was 40% off and ...
... spaced by the checkouts in addition to being found in the regular books/mags aisle.

All summer, all fall, all winter, never saw a Hillary book. I actually looked for it. Blockbuster #1 was never visible at my local Krogers.

Haven't seen any Richard Clarke or Ronald Suskind or Michael Moore or Al Franken ...

Whaddya wanna bet that Karen Hughes' new book will be found in abundance this week?

I don't buy ANYTHING with print from Krogers.

29. I bought a copy
of Nickeled and Dimed at a Kroger. I also bought a Betty Bowers (Landover Baptist) book, although I don't think the person who stocked it realized it was satire because it was stocked with other, serious books about religion.

At least as far as the Costco near where I live goes. I've been able to buy Franken's and Michael Moore's books. I recently picked up and am reading Ken Phillip's book "American Dynasty: Aristocracy, fortune and the politics of deceit in the house of Bush".

This is the Silver Lake Costco in Everett Washington I'm talking about. Which one do you shop at?

17. In DFW our Costco has a wide selection.
And suprisingly, more liberal authors than Wing-nut. Molly Ivins, Al Franken, the works.

The token Hannity because even dumbass-types like to have a book they have never read on the shelf. O'Lielly as well. But overall, a good mix. Complain to the management, because they do give more political dough to the Dems.

19. Not true of 'my' Costco.
And I'm in a pretty right-wing county - Orange County, CA, home of the Nixon Library and the John Birch Society and one of the most rabidly rw Repug Party leaderships in the state!

I've seen and bought several liberal books at the Costco in Fullerton - Clarke, Moore, Franken, House of Bush...(haven't bought that one yet, still reading previous purchases :9 ). They also carry the rightwing bs, too, but then I don't think they *should* censor their books.

When I bought Clarke's book last week, it seemed to be selling quickly - only a few left vs many copies of Hannity, Coulter, et al. Maybe your Costco is just out??

Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 12:06 AM by janeaustin
Seriously.

At my Costco, Clarke is sold out. House of Bush, house of Saud is sold down. John Dean hasn't come in yet, American Dynasty is gone. I'm sure Franken sold out long ago.

(Edited to add a book)

I wrote another letter yesteday, second letter in 6 months. - sheesh - I live in a liberal neighborhood and my King Sooper store only carries those yuck RW authors. Never are there the BEST SELLING Liberal books??? Doesn't make any sense...

The first time when I complained, they did get one copy of Al Franken's book in, so I bought it - since I made such a stink. That was the last time I saw a liberal book.

Did they only order a couple of copies or do the good books just sell better.
