4. his eyes
Sadr has very extraordinary eyes. They stand out in every picture I've seen of him. To me he looks frightening as hell, and then I put myself in an infuriated Iraqi's position and honestly I can see the appeal, he exudes defiance and anger. These emotions have got to appeal to many Iraqis at this point. Its gonna be rough folks.

51. The judge that signed his arrest warrant was with Saddam's secret police
and he flipped to our side after Saddam was toppled. Just like we need some Nazis to run things at the end of WWII, Bremer decided to hire some of Saddam's thugs and torturers to do his dirty work.

and was willing to kill people for his beliefs, beleifs that were abhorent to some. Personally I would have lined up behind Che and not Sadr but as I'm not an Iraqi what I think of this guy is irrelevant...too many people seem to think democracy is about who WE choose to lead Iraq.

Also this guy was considered a moderate not long ago - it's only when he started criticising Bremmer and the occupation that the US powers that be got shirty.

28. I think there's a theory
that the black somehow aids the circulation of the air through the loose robes, keeping the body fairly cool.

this could be it.

The scientists found that the black robe absorbed 2-1/2 times more solar radiation than the white robe did. The surface of the black robe was up to 6 degrees C (11 degrees F.) hotter than the surface of the white robe.

But the temperature of the man's skin was the same whether he wore the black or the white burnoose. More important, the man said he felt cooler in the black robe than he did in the white one! Why?

Warm air trapped beneath the black robe rises faster than the air beneath the white robe. The movement of the warm air sets up a breeze that sucks cooler air up from the bottom of the robe and pushes it out the top. The loose-fitting burnoose is like wearing a mini-air-conditioning system.

It's not a dumb question at all.

19. Those Are The Eyes Of Our Fate
From what I've read, this man has seen a lot of the evils of this world...from murdered relatives to a violent culture that is now in hyper-violence. What light is there in this kind of life or can be shown in those eyes???

Imagine if we were occupied and there was a warrant put out for the Archbishop of New York from his preachings? Think the streets of New York would be empty? As the line from Full Metal Jacket applies here..."We are in a world of shit"....

And this was supposed to be our ally?

One last thought: I saw the moron Boortz on earlier using that worn-out chestnut of how if "Poppy Bush has supported the Shiites"...blah blah. Wanna bet Mr. Boortz would be none to happy if that support had led to a Shiite fundamentalist regime, and he's not too happy with the concept of supporting self-determination now.

As one C-SPAN wingnut says...we need to send 5 million Americans over to straighten this up. Yep...that kinda thinking will help this regime's cause.

47. Newsweek and Time pick the worst pictures to demonize people
Remember how TIME darkened the picture of O.J. Simpson that they put on their cover for dramatic effect?

I suggest to you that Paul Bremer is the real villain in the Iraq story.

The US charges of murder against Al-Sadr are FALSE, and the judge that signed arrest warrant was with Saddam's secret police.

I remember the incident which was discussed and posted in DU. Al-Khoei was not the target, but another other cleric who had been a Saddam supporter.

There was no murder here! It was a crowd that was outraged at seeing a cleric that had worked for Saddam's Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The judge that signed the arrest warrant against Al-Sadr was a member of Saddam's much feared secret police. The US is lying as usual.

Here are the two stories, one from the BBC dated April 10, 2003, about the incident in question. The other story is from The Guardian dated October 22, 2003, about Habboush, the former Mukhabarat officer that is working for Chalabi.

Shia leader murdered in Najaf
Thursday, 10 April, 2003

A senior Shia cleric working with coalition forces has been killed inside a mosque in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf.
Abdul Majid al-Khoei returned to Iraq from exile in London only last week.

He was one of two Muslim leaders hacked to death outside the Ali Mosque, one of the holiest sites for Shia Muslims.

The other was cleric Haider Kelidar, whom according to Arabic satellite channel al-Jazeera, had worked for Saddam Hussein's ministry of religious affairs.

<snip>

He (Khoei) had noticed Mr Kelidar coming under attack by a crowd and gone to help him - but was himself knifed. Both men died.

Other reports said crowds shouted abuse at the clerics, causing Mr Khoei to produce a gun and fire shots.

Plan to arrest maverick Iraqi cleric for murder

Michael Howard in Baghdad
Wednesday October 22, 2003
The Guardian

Coalition and Iraqi officials are preparing an arrest warrant for the firebrand Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr over his alleged involvement with the brutal murder of a rival cleric last spring, sources close to the Iraqi governing council told the Guardian yesterday.

The warrant, which has yet to be finalised, cites Mr Sadr for instigating a deadly attack on Abdel Majid al-Khoei, who was stabbed to death by a mob in the Shia holy city of Najaf on April 10.

It is said to be signed by Tahir Jalil Habboush - a senior mukhabarat officer under the former regime who now works with the coalition authorities - and is based on the confessions of 23 men who were involved in the killing.

54. FWIW
I thought I would bump this up with a link to Raed's blog entry for the day.

<snip>
All what we can hear from the coalition governments’ spokesmen, and from the international media news are some fake explanations and explanations…

Let me declare some points:

AsSadr is NOT reflecting a minority of Iraqis, this is a stupid big lie.
Whether we liked him or not, he is the political and religious leader for MILLIONS of Iraqis in the southern region…
There are 15 million Iraqis living in the south, and another 5 million in Baghdad, I can say that 5 to 7 millions of them can be considered as AsSadr followers.

AsSadr is NOT a mere twenty-something year old guy, that is playing games.
Whether we liked him or not, he is a phenomenon. When people in the south of Iraq look at Muqtada AsSadr, they see the history of his father, the deep roots of his religious supporter: AlHaeri.

AsSadr is NOT a small follower of the Iranian Government; he has very bad relations with the official government of Iran, unlike Sistani and Hakim.

AsSadr is THE GOVERNMENT in most of the cities of the south: Amara, Kut, Nasryya and Diwanyya and Simawa partially, and Najaf partially (Kufa is a small city in Najaf that is the center of AsSadr).

is a direct counter to an RW colleague I argue all day with. He insisted yesterday Sadr is only an extremist making a lot of noise.

Thanks!
