USA Today 4-6-04
Bush overall job approval is 43% with 47% disapproval.

Sounds like Saddam, Trent Lott, Newt ratings!.

I do not drink alcohol but if he gets to 30% I shall open a bottle of Ripple.

Oh aren't we a little demanding? Come on -- below 50% is already time to open a bottle of Ripple. Below 45% is Southern Comfort time, even if you don't drink.

5. I won't get excited until he's consistently in the 30s
With disapprovals over 50.

I'm sure once that happens, he'll defrost Osama from his carbonite prison and/or "find" those WMD that were planted there by us. (see the Tehran Times article from a few weeks back...)

7. I'm guessing May will bring his first sub-40 approval ratings.
Earlier if the Rice testimony goes poorly.

Did you know that 43% is his LOWEST approval rating EVER, in ANY POLL? Scan through the Polling Report listings, through the beginning of his term. He's hit 44% in a couple of polls two or three times. (http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm)

I know some aren't as optimistic, but I see him in an almost constant state of free-fall since 9-11. He got a bump when Iraq started and a smaller, more short-lived bump after capturing Hussein. But free-falling has been almost the default mode for his polling data.

11. Yeah, but WTF??
What's with the 53% agree that military intervention in Iraq was the right thing to do and only 35% disagree. I just cannot fathom these polls. It just doesn't make any sense to me that he can have an overall job approval rating (in the same poll) that has his overall approval at 43% and the Iraq thing so high. If I am not mistaken this same poll showed that only 40% approve of the way that Bush is handling the situation in Iraq. Now, that's a real head scratcher!

12. I don't understand either
The Sunnis hate us and are out to kill us.
The Kurds were allowing al Qaeda to build training camps so they could kill us.
The Shiites are now coming out hating us.

There were no WMD - (Saddam allowed that theory to continue so that the neighboring countries wouldn't attack). Our sanctions were working, he was under control.

Iraq is unsettled with tens of thousands of people of all nationalities dying. We don't know friend from foe. We have the tiger by the tail and it is going to be difficult to let go. When we leave, the country will be much worse off and the people there will hate us.

American defense is dipping into the reserves for manpower. They are even outsourcing some of the security work to companies like Blackwater.

Why are we in Iraq? Why did we go in the first place? Why do 53% of Americans still think the war was a good idea?

13. people want to show support for the troops
even if they have serious questions about the war - so I believe those numbers reflect a desire to back up the soldiers in any way they can.

16. Whether it was "right" is a very different question from whether or not...
... he is handling it right, or whether or not it was worth it.

The latest Pew poll shows that 57% feel he doesn't have a clear plan in Iraq (32% feel he does). While that poll shows 57% still feel we made the "right" decision going into Iraq (35% "wrong"), it's down from a high of 74%. Meanwhile, the latest CBS poll says 54% feel Iraq was "not worth it" (to 37% who feel it was).

The real world question of whether it was "worth it" is very diferent from the hypothetical, moral argument of whether it was "right". "Worth" considers all of the consequences, while "right" is simply an attempt to justify a bad situation. Most people still say it was "right" because they are having problems justifying the horror otherwise. But even the number who think it was "right" fall more and more with every American soldier who falls.

In addition, not only does overall job approval factor in a number of things (some of which he rates above 50% on, such as whether Iraq was "right", and some of which he's below 40%, no doubt on the economy). Also, the overall "Approval" rating is likely elevated b/c people just want to appear to be supporting the institution of the presidency. That doesn't mean they're going to vote for him, however.

14. Pew is usually biased in favor of Dim Son.

As indicated on Pollkatz' site, Pew is third only to Faux and ABC/WP in kissing Busholini butts. This would seem to indicate that Smirk's actual 'approval' is below 40%.
