Is a new John Dean even possible in postmodern America?
When John Dean blew the whistle on the Nixon administration, the jig was up for Dick and his goons. The media didn't choose to ignore the damning evidence and the Republican party understood that the president was doomed.

Now we have Clarke, et al. telling the truth about the * administration and the GOP ignores and/or smears them and the media gleefully serves as a mouthpiece for the GOP.

I'm incredibly sad to say this, but I suspect that Colin Powell, Condi Rice, or even * himself could show up in front of the 9/11 commission naked, drunk, coked to the gills and soaked in blood, screaming wildly that * made the attacks happen on purpose, and no one--at least no one who's not a committed DU'r would give a tinker's damn.

In the postmodern world, the old master narratives no longer exist. There is no such thing as Truth with a capital "T." It's all just spin and lies and, more often than not, money grubbing horror.

I don't think a new John Dean is possible. Man, I'm depressed.

1. I truly believe that no one would care about Watergate thee days.

It would take something so incredibly heinous to throw Bush out of office.

Basically when they control all three branches, there is not a lot we can do. Taking back the Presidency is the first step.

2. Three things we had going for us then:
1. a watchdog press instead of a lapdog press, which involved a paper like the NY Times willing to put its ass on the line to run
the Pentagon Papers on their pages.
2. A balanced Supreme Court that didn't act like partisan hacks and was a fair arbiter of final justice.
3. Laws that protected personal privacy. Remember, the reason why Ellsberg prevailed was because goon squads broke into his psychiatrist's office and either tried to, or succeeded in stealing private medical records. These days, the psychiatrist would be arrested for NOT turning over the documents to the government.
Oh, and we also had this little thing called fair elections, wherein even people knew that if didn't at least present a semblance of decency, they would be toast. This crew in the White House now acts with impunity because they already know the election is fixed.

Bottom line: You're right -- a John Dean today would be a Richard Clarke, forced to defend his credibility against media whores like Wolf Blitzer, who drag unfounded rumors about his personal life into his broadcasts.

3. Worse Than Watergate: Former Nixon Counsel John Dean Says Bush Should Be I
Why? Because Dean is the one who dared tell Nixon in 1973 that the web of lies surrounding the Watergate scandal had formed "a cancer on the presidency." When Dean went public about that conversation, the Nixon White House smeared him as a liar. Fortunately, the conversation had been taped, and Dean was vindicated.

Dean agreed to testify to Congress that Nixon was guilty of covering up Watergate, even though he was certain to condemn himself to prison. Dean was later charged with obstruction of justice and would eventually serve 127 days for taking part in the cover-up.

Dean is charging in a new book out this week Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush that the crimes of President Bush are worse than his previous boss and are grounds for impeachment.

In the discussion with Amy he takes exception to being sentenced. She didn't let him scot free with the statement.

Take a look at Dean now.

4. I'm beginning to have a bit of hope that enough voters...
will wake up to the truth about this administration, and how much damage it is doing to the country, to vote Bush out. The problem is the press helped the people understand that Nixon was tinkering with the system itself, and, in the end, neither party would accept that. Now the press frames everything as "political," and nothing as right or wrong, and the Republican party is so extreme it cares far more about its agenda than about the system.

So ending the reign of the Bush cabal, if it comes, has to be "political," in the November election, brought about by the drip, drip of scandal, economic factors, and/or the horror of the Iraq war.
