20 GIs, 100 Iraqis Killed Since Weekend
Odd DU's front page reads the beginning of the end, just now...

By HAMZA HENDAWI, Associated Press Writer
AP reporter Bassem Mroue in Fallujah contributed to this story.

Al-Sadr left his fortress-like complex Tuesday in Kufa and moved to his office near a sacred shrine in this holy city, vowing to shed his own blood to oust the American occupation.

U.S. officials have suggested they will move soon to arrest al-Sadr, who is surrounded by his al-Mahdi Army militia. Members of the militia were behind a wave of violence Sunday in which eight American soldiers and dozens of Iraqis were killed.

"I have pledged not to allow a drop of blood to be shed except my own," al-Sadr said in a statement. "I'm prepared to have my own blood shed for what is holy to me."

He said he was moving to avoid bloodshed in a mosque. "I feared that the sanctity of a glorious and esteemed mosque would be violated by scum and evil people," he said. The Americans "will have no qualms to embark on such actions."

"Insurgents usually fire and run. This time they're digging in, which is the first time we've seen them do that," Ebert said.

Top U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer conceded not all was going smoothly as the coalition approached a June 30 handover of sovereignty to the Iraqis. Bremer canceled a trip to Washington this week because of the mounting violence.

A U.S. official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said all American officials in Iraq, including those working for the Coalition Provisional Authority, had been told to remain inside their compounds since Monday because of security worries. It was not clear how long the rule would remained in place.

I have plenty to say about this story and several disturbing elements in it. I need to compose myself, and get some rest, as i have been up for about 36 hours now. Just for now, 20 GIs in 2 days???? Still wants to meet June 30th dead line? Main Iraq reconstructionist suddenly says, well ok...so we have to admit its not all hunky dory. Well no shit Sherlock! If we pull out now, it would degenerate into civil war almost immediately. I'm sorry if this next part will seem oppurtunistic, however who the hell can even begin to get us out of this major clusterfuck? Wesley Clark can. Dont give me that Pristina airfield WW3 bullshit. That was British General Jackson's, American Generals Shelton's and Swartzkopf's fuckup. The latter two men tying Clark's hands behind his back, then forced him to resign for not going along with their ill conceived notions of diplomacy.

Come on read this and feel despondant with me. I just got some sort of sick vision when I read this. It was creepy, like the inevitable Armegeddon is here. Someone give me real hope, please?

2. It's a war and will probably be pretty bad for a while.
Some retired something or another on FAUX was just talking about the attack on the Marines in Ramadi. He was talking about U.S. fatalities. There was some report that said 90. He said it was more than ten and less than 90. Bad news all around.

5. Real hope? Sorry, that's out of stock.
Quite possibly, we are seeing a truly historic event - the end of America's status as the sole superpower.

The military implications you've pointed out are important. The diplomatic and economic potentialities are more so.

We may as well forget Iraqi civil war. That will happen, and we cannot stop that any more than we can stop the Sun from rising. We need to get out now before our troops are cut off from supply and a military disaster occurs. I truly do not think I exaggerate.

Also a point of interest is that the story has now changed to 12GIs being killed, from the original 20 from when I originally posted this. Also odd is that the yahoo main page link (sbcyahoo home for me) says 16. So which is it? by tomorrow morning it will be 2 or 3:mad:
heres the revised story link:

7. Well, I have to say that nothing that has
happened has shocked or surprised me. I pretty much expected things to proceed in the manner in which they have. In fact, last summer I predicted that 600 US soldiers would have died in Iraq by April 1st of this year, it ended up being 601.

The neocons plans for Iraq were always an ideologically based fantasy that were bound to eventually run into reality.

It is definitely horrible what's happening, just not anything that I didn't expect from the very start.

I know that's not much comfort, but maybe this country needs to periodically bump up against the limitations of its power. It's just too bad that so many people have to die or be wounded for us to get the lesson.
