Is Paul Bremer a man who is devoid of Irony?
I can't find the quote (If you got it post it) but he said something to the tune of...

<Sadr's people still believe Iraq is ruled by those with the biggest/most guns and we're going to prove them wrong>

Or some similar ridiculuos quote. Um, Mr. Bremer, how do you propose the US "pacify" those Iraqis who believe that the business end of an AK wins the day? With the business end of a M-1?

And...

"establish his authority in the place of the legitimate authority".

"We have a group under Moqtada al-Sadr that has basically placed itself outside the legal authorities, the coalition and Iraqi officials..." he said in Baghdad.

Whatever:eyes:

Good god these people are out of their bloody minds.

1. The Baghdad offices of the Republican Party are just trying to keep
up appearances. Speaking of Bremer, has anyone heard of this Bremer Commission I keep hearing referred to? What was it?

2. Yes. He seems completely out-of-touch.

I saw the quote you are referring to and am trying to find it again.

I'll edit it in here if I find it.

EDIT: Having trouble finding it due to balky/slow internet connection, but my recollection (paraphrase) is "Sadr is of the mistaken belief that this country is going to be ruled by those with the biggest guns." Something like that.

Bremer described al-Sadr as "a guy who has a fundamentally inappropriate view of the new Iraq."

"He believes that in the new Iraq, like in the old Iraq, power should be to the guy with guns," Bremer said. "That is an unacceptable vision for Iraq."

Oddly, that quote no longer seems to be in that CNN article linked from that thread. But that's the same one I read in several articles online yesterday.

I found a variant of it today in an article quoting Bremer's comments on the Today show:

http://www.thesunlink.com/redesign/2004-04-07/nationworld/442968.shtml

In Baghdad, U.S. civilian administrator Paul Bremer, while trying to play down the extent of the recent Shiite rebellion, suggested that the coalition's entire mission was now at stake. "The dividing line in Iraq now is the people who support democracy and the people who want to return to an Iraq where power is determined by the guy with the guns," Bremer said in an interview on NBC's "Today."

3. When he first went to Iraq as the Chief Cahuna of the CPA
one of his first statements was " All foreigners should stay out of Iraq!". I don't think anyone could top that statement for its ironies.

4. Bremer came too late for...
Paddy Chayefsky and Stanley Kubrick, both of whom could have done absolutely brain-searing "comedies" about this guy.
