New radio show blasting Bush and Repukes tonight.
I just discovered a show at 7.580 MHz on the Yaesu. This comes from the shortwave station WHRA. A guy and gal (Joyce Riley maybe) have a show called The Power Hour.

I was surfing the shortwave trying to find news from Iraq and found this on a religious network of all places. They were also giving positive plugs for Air America.

1300 UTC (7 am MDT), on WHRI at 15105. It goes until 1400, then the frequency switches to 17560 for the next hour.

Couldn't pick it up yesterday, though. I'm in Southern New Mexico....
It is on the web, also....

Joyce has been on Coast to Coast often. Her big issue is the mysterious illnesses suffered by the 1st Gulf War vets and the stonewalling by the government....

I have Grundig YB400 and a couple of 50 ft. longwires strung between a 25
ft pole and two 15 ft poles, one going approx. N-S and the other E-W...

3. Thanks.
1300 UTC??? That's too early for me. I'll listen to the late-nite
replay.

They have a lady on now exposing the US Military for sending records
of our wounded soldiers to India for transcription. They can save
something like 10 cents a line over US workers. I need to look into to this. Sounds like a security compromise.

I think everyone on this board needs a shortwave.

4. Hey, what Yaesu model?
I have a Yaesu VX5-R amateur handheld transceiver and listen to SW all the time. The bands were a lot more fun in the past before the Jesus People got aboard.

5. I have an old FRG-7 analogue.
I've had the damn thing for years. I also have a couple of portables -
Grundig and Magnavox. I started with a Zenith Transoceanic back in
the 1960s.

Wish I could afford some of the new digital models. The Kenwood I had
was destroyed by lightening a few years ago, so I've been using the old
Yaesu since then. The FRG-7 is one of the best of the analogue units
from back in the late 70s and early 80s.

6. I agree. Shortwave is a must. It is the ONLY radio I have listened to
for the past year.

Esp. in the AM when I wake up, I have 5 or 6 choices...2 BBC World Service feeds (Africa and Asia), Canada, Sweden, China, Australia, and N. Korea for fun. And Radio Netherlands. It's wonderful!!

You guys have tabletops???? What's a good model?

I like the Grundig YB400....what other portables are good?

7. Yaesu, Icom, Japan Radio, Kenwood, Drake
all make excellent tabletops. I purchased a Drake tabletop for my
85-year-old mother. It's actually made in the USA, but prices are
high. Hers only cost $249.00, but that was several years ago. Look for
a Drake SW-1 or SW-2 on the used market for a nice starter tabletop. If
you can spend over $500.00, the Yaesu FRG-100B is nice.

Grundig, Sangean, and Sony make nice portables. Expect to spend close
to $100.00 for a good one. Also, Sangean use to make the Radio Shack
models. Buy a copy of "Passport To World Band Radio" for reviews and
prices.

8. I did a full research job before getting the Grundig....I found

the Radio Netherlands site very useful

I tried to get ahold of the RS/Sangean, but the had sold out ...found out too late it was discontinued.
The Grundig YB400 was worth the $150...I'm very happy with it. It's a good value. Has lots of good features and SSB.

A tabletop would be nice though...might improve my chances here in S. New Mexico of getting some of the really far away stuff. I can't make out Radio Jordan, for example, but I know it's there, oh so faintly!
The names mentioned are all familiar to me, but I don't know anybody who owns one, so I don't have any practical, real-life experience info....

Of course, SW may become moot if this home networking stuff through the phone lines happens. It's in pilot in Maryland. The interference knocks out SW!! Ham operators are also upset.....

9. You can improve the reception of your Grundig
by attaching a 20-30 foot wire to your antenna. Strip the wire and wrap
it around the antenna or use an alligator clip.

Are you talking about the home networking using power lines? If that
is causing interference, that would violate our international
agreements (anything that causes jamming or interference of foreign or
domestic broadcasts).

SSB is a nice feature for a unit in that price range.

Almost forgot. A friend had good luck with an indoor antenna called
the TinyTenna (or something like that). He ordered it from a guy
advertising on 9.495 MHz from 1900 to 2100 UTC. You might want to
do a Google search on it.
