And have nightmares about being lost inside of giant ones that stretch for miles --

I was just curious how big they really get, and where I'd be able to see the biggest ones.

7. Actually, CA
SoCal has most of the refineries in the country. That's why we can never understand why the gas prices skyrocket here first and so fast before the rest of the country gets hit.

4. where's that? Lake Charles, Louisiana?
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 05:23 PM by amazona
No idea where the largest are but there are lots of them in south Louisiana and Texas. I would imagine in any oil-producing state.

On Edit: Are you searching for accident reports? I think a lot of them are only reported locally, as they do have accidents, even with injury or death, rather often - it's a dangerous business.

9. The picture in my post is from Los Angeles, actually --.
I would indeed, be curious about accident reports. I have such a peculiar dread of these places. Would like to understand their dynamics better.

5. All over the place...
there are about 14 major refining areas in the country, but I don't have the list handy.

Pretty much anywhere there's a deepwater port to get the crude in there will be refineries. The northeast and the Gulf west of Mississippi seem to have the most. Just guessing, but the West Coast may have larger refineries because of fewer harbor areas.

6. Between New Orleans and Baton Rouge
on the Mississippi River.

Lake Charles, LA has a couple of big ones.

Beaumont/Port Arthur and South of Houston have big ones.

New Jersey.
