Sadr City
Holy crap--so far I've only ever heard Sadr City described "a part of Baghdad", and then I read this.

"Formerly known as Saddam City, the district is named for al-Sadr's father, who was slain by the Saddam Hussein regime. It is home to an estimated 2 million people, more than half the capital's prewar population of 3.8 million." (It was on CNN!! http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/04/08/iraq.main/index.html)

So what bushco is saying is that 2/3 of the people in the largest city in the country are involved in a violent uprising, but the problem is "not widespread".

P.S. Watching Gappie's testimony as I write this, imagining her date with the firing squad. I generally oppose the death penalty, but I think I could make an exception for war criminals.

3. This little nugget stands out for me:
"more than half the capital's prewar population of 3.8 million"

What now, I wonder, is the post-war population? Is there a reason for having to specify it as having been "prewar?" I thought there were only a few thousand unfortunates. In a city with 3.8 million, that hardly sounds like a huge population alteration.

I do grieve for those thousands, please don't get me wrong. I have seen the pictures of the devastation and inhumanity.

4. Like you I am adverse to the Death Penality......... BUT
With the shocking amount of death and destruction caused by these people, I feel exceptions could be in order. Actually they should go in front of the World Court in the Hague, for War Crimes....

6. correction
>So what bushco is saying is that 2/3 of the people in
>the largest city in the country are involved in a violent uprising,

Actually, it's saying that an uprising is occuring in an area of the city that houses 2/3 (probably 3/5) of the population. It doesn't specify how many people are involved. From the reports, it sounds like thousands, less likely tens of thousands, definitely not millions.

Yet.
