Would 9/11 have occurred if Gore was president...
Let's put aside the theories that Bush MIHOP or LIHOP (with knowledge) when concerning 9/11. Let's take it as Bush says, it was an intelligence failure that lead to 9/11. Would it still have happened if Gore were president. If those are the circumstances then I would say there is a good chance that it wouldn't have happened. Here why:

-If Gore were president then this whole transition period taken by Bush and his administration (which was up wards of 6 months) would be shortened to a few weeks for Gore. I am sure Gore would have new people in his cabinet and senior staffers but the transition would be much smoother, no doubt.

-Gore would have not stopped the investigation in Yemen of the USS Cole bombing like G.W. Bush did. Chances are, he would have stepped it up. Knowing that Yemen was a hotbed for Al Queada, there seems to be pretty good chances that we would have gotten good intelligence, maybe even arrested members, that may have been able to give evidence of upcoming attacks.

-Gore would have listened to key counter-terrorism advisers already in place much more than Bush did. It is quite clear that Bush, Rice and others seemed skeptical (to say the least) about anyone from the Clinton administration. They did not trust these people. Just look at Richard Clarke. It seems to me that Gore's Natl Security team would be much closer to these advisers.

Maybe Gore couldn't have stopped 9/11. We don't know. But I am sure that he would have been much better prepared that Bush was during his first 7 months in office.

2. well that is why I said
in my first sentence to put aside the LIHOP and MIHOP theories. I want to fight Chimpy's own excuse of 9/11. If we can show that Gore would have done a better job no matter what, then Repubs would have zero arguments in favor of Chimpy in the fall.

3. You know...
I hate it when the repugs bring that up...I tell them that it probably wouldn't have happend because he came from an Administration that made terrorism a #1 priority...but who knows...

My opinion is...I think that he would have connected the dots...we may never know now...

4. No
there would be an ongoing smear campaign against Gore form the right, but no "war" on "terror." no occupation of Iraq, and no 9-11.

9. Then here's a big DU hug!
Damn! I couldn't find a smiley for a hug and I'm not that touchy feely anyways. How about a nice :toast:? I usually prefer a beer to a hug. :)

16. Thanks beam_me_up...
I have always known that I have been amongst friends, but I really needed this!

Being that you are from Oakland Ca, I guess that you wouldn't be a Steeler fan by any chance, perhaps?

21. Honor among thieves, I suppose,
but I'd never thought of myself as a fan.

{That could very well be the lamest attempt at some sort of off-beat humor you've ever seen. To answer you straight (which I seldom do anyone but have no wish to even accidentally offend what could potentially be a new friend): Frankly, I know absolutely NOTHING about sports what so ever. SORRY!}

23. welcome
I am a new member myself (like 3 or 4 months here). I don't know how long you have been lurking or how long you have been into politics. If you are a total newbie, like I was, I suggest keeping an open mind and reading everything you can. Sometimes posters here at DU are a little hard-headed and sometimes are harsh to us newbies. It is rare but it happens. I think the more well-informed, open-minded, intelligent posters we have here at DU, the better for us all.

6. Nope, would not have happened.
Even if you believe the incompetence theory you know the same team would have been on it that was on the other thwarted attacks. They would have kept up their pressure on Al Queda and not ignored the threat.

I personally believe MIHOP.

7. Slimey repuke Judd Gregg (N.H.) said "yes" today in a rant on the senate
floor. Judd went on to praise the Chimp's handling of all things 9/11. :puke:

8. Yes and no.
I think it's entirely possible that 9/11 would have occurred in part. Let's say the first plane would have hit regardless. Gore, instead of running for safety, would have personally made sure that the air force was up and defending our skies after the first hit, not the third. So maybe the second tower would have still stood, the pentagon would never have lost a wing, and thousands of lives would never have been lost.
Still, it would have been the worst terrorist attack on US soil in history and all the repubs would have been calling for blood, but that's the saddest part of this. When lives are saved there's no thanks, when lives are lost there's no responsibility. Ask Bill Clinton about that. He saved more than most give him credit for.

11. Absolutely not.
The Clinton anti-terrorism team would have prevented it just like they did thru-out their term after their initial betrayal by King George I a few months into their term.

No Oil for Gold threats.

No PNAC agenda.

No criminals in our executive branch (north, poindexter, wolfie, etc.)

No wag the dog.

No vacations.

Do you mean to insinuate that clearing brush at the pig farm is easier than running the country?

12. It depends on who the real enemy is. . .
. . . and what their real agenda or motives are.

I don't for one minute buy that all the death and destruction of 9/11 was fomented by Muslim fundamentalists who hate our freedoms. So, it isn't ABOUT preventing "Terrorism" (as we've been led to perceive it). It's about preventing PSYCHIC DRIVERS that manipulate social policy on a global scale.

13. Ultimately, aren't you asking the wrong question?
Whether or not Gore could have prevented 9/11 is a mute point.

But what about our future? The question we all need to be asking is, can Kerry prevent the NEXT attack--the one we have been told repeatedly by the current (mis)administration is coming? Given how defensive and arguably marginalized the left and liberals in general have become in our current "war" centered society, what do you think would happen to our political perspective if another, considerably greater and more devastating event were to happen while a Democrat was in the White House?

15. Nope
For one thing he would have listened to Clarke, just like they did for the millenium.

Hell, he would probably have wonky discussions with Clarke just for the hell of it.

It's amazing what can happen when you have a leader who questions things and likes to know what is going on.

18. He wouldn't have alienated our allies
by arrogance, stupidity, and a war of aggression.

He damn sure wouldn't have allowed anyone to say the UN was "irrelevant."

He wouldn't have spent every dime we have.

AND HE WOULDN'T HAVE CUT TAXES TO THE SUPERRICH. Just a suspicion, of course.
