Universal/Canadian Health Care Need Help/Info...
Just had an arguement with a friend who listens to too much right wing radio. He insists Canadian health care system is poor because Canadians are coming here in droves to get their surgery/treatment because the waiting time is so long. Insists this is "common knowledge" that Canadian's die waitig for essential treatment.

Also that if we had universal care we would have to wait for treatment while people with minor problems flooded the doctor's offices.

Any debunking links would be most helpful.

Thanks,
MJ

1. I've not heard of too many people dying waiting for treatment
But, even then at least they were on a waiting list instead of just cast aside.

2. It's absolutely not true
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 01:24 PM by NJCher
I posted about this about six months to a year ago. My libertarian doctor claimed the same. I posted to Canadians on this board and elsewhere and learned they are satisfied with their system.

Another r-w myth.

Cher

on edit, re HeyHey's, inform this person that 18,000 Americans die a year because they have no health insurance.

Some minuses--Many pluses.

Employer pmemiums rising at annual 14% rate bhi. Before Hillary and Ira.

14% in 1990.

1.5% in 1996.

8.5% in 2000.

13.9% now and zooming.

Small firms are hurting.

Excellent article today in Greensboro NC News and Record.

5. Tell him to ask some Canadians.
I have! Every one I've asked is quite pleased, especially when they compare to our system. I have many part-time neighbors who are Canadian.

7. Use these search engines on major topics--always.
www.yahoo.com search -canadian health care
www.google.com--" " " "

Treatment in US. Sho! Super Mayo Clinic just across border.

Report few years ago said most-most--canadians treated here were here on vacation when they developed problems.

Waiting. Kidding? How long to get an appointment. Months.

Search Vets Hospitals. Vet pal took one year to get hearing aid.

Universal like Canada would solve many problems

1.treatment early before becomes critical.
2.children health better with treatment parents cannot afford at present. check bad teeth on poor children.
3. mental comfort from knowing one can get help.
4.Stop ripoffs. Same medicine for $1.00 in US and .50 in Canada.
5.Early treatment cut down on major illnessses in elderly.

Why is it we are so smart. So much smarter than rest of world?

Read a book --"How we rank". Not so good. We have great egos.

We destroy nations. Our sanctions took Iraq GDP from 60B to 16B per year. Lose 75% of our GDP and?

9. From US border to Canada(Michigan-Detroit)
These stories are frequently passed around-Windsor is across the border. You always here about someone who can't get some major surgery done.
First, Canadians have regular medical care--so any valid complaint is about extraordinary conditions.
Second, just heard about a case in Canadian Supreme Court about a man who had to wait several months for surgery or something like that.
That would be a case to follow.
Finally, no one compares the overall differences in the two countries.
How many Americans would not even be able to afford the special treatment that some Canadians complain took too long to get?
