Bush told Niger intel questionable before SOTU?
http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_2518.shtml

"An intelligence consultant who was present at two White House briefings where the uranium report was discussed confirmed that the President was told the intelligence was questionable and that his national security advisors urged him not to include the claim in his State of the Union address.

"The report had already been discredited," said Terrance J. Wilkinson, a CIA advisor present at two White House briefings. "This point was clearly made when the President was in the room during at least two of the briefings."

Bush's response was anger, Wilkinson said.

"He said that if the current operatives working for the CIA couldn't prove the story was true, then the agency had better find some who could," Wilkinson said. "He said he knew the story was true and so would the world after American troops secured the country."

Does anyone know about the reliability of the source? It's repeated at http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=8&id=265801

1. Yes ...... This EXPLOSIVE story has been all over DU since yesterday
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 01:42 PM by Trajan
Now it must break through the GOP sycophants in the mainstream media by becoming SO powerful they cannot avoid it .....

It supports the assertions in Joe Wilson's NYT column that Bush MUST have known prior to the SOTU that the Niger Letter was a forgery ..

THIS goes farther, and shows the President as WELL AWARE of this, and refusing to accept this fact, since it counters his policy needs ...

He KNOWINGLY looked into the eyes of the american people. and with that corny, homesy, folksy sincerity, .. LIED THROUGH HIS TEETH to us ........

He is an amoral fool ...

2. This sounds entirely believable
Of course Smirky and his minions will deny, deny, DENY! But the episode this Wilkinson describes sounds entirely in keeping with Bush's idiotic sense of machismo and his barely controlled anger. And, of course, Bush "knew" it was true (what, did God tell him this, also?) so that's all that matters anyway.

4. Yes and no
I can't really bring myself to believe that he was so decisive and confrontational. I *can* imagine him looking over his shoulder and asking Cheney or Rummy to make things all better, please...

11. Doesn't it though?
I can just see the little strutting popinjay stabbing the table with an emphatic finger, getting in the face of someone and demanding his name and the name of his immediate superior, then backing off to bellow at the room for them to get their act together or (fill in macho threat).

It just smacks of the truth.

So where are you Terry Wilkinson? You're the Fouche who can bring this all down. History's calling.

Lots of time in world history it's a case of plausibility that sways people. The look on his face in South Africa was a twisted hybrid of unctuous charm, folksy common sense, blythe dismissal, confusion and the indignation of one who's born above all this. He was incoherent to boot. Nobody looking at that will think it was a good showing.

3. BBC confirms this
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3525&mesg_id=3525&page=2

As someone said earlier, it looks like the CIA dropped a dime on George Bush. I guess Bush's father didn't warn him to never to piss off the CIA.

6. The CIA WONT fall on their swords ....
For a egotistical prince who tries to sully THEIR reputations .....

Walter Pincus (WP) has been mining their discontent for months, and these stories from the CIA/DIA pros who are squawking are now getting through the media blockade against ANTI bush stories ....

9. I think the BBC story is about Wilson, not Wilkinson
another good piece of evidence, but one * MIGHT be able to weasle out of by saying that the information was not passed on to him. I surely hope that Mr. Wilkinson, who ever he is, is in a nice safe location (probably a CIA safe house? ), and will be coming out through some more well known media ASAP. We can't handle much more of what he has done to our country. The world can't handle much more.

12. That's correct, but confirms the same story with a different source
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 02:19 PM by htuttle
From the BBC story:

But the CIA has now told the BBC that Mr Wilson's findings had been passed onto the White House in March 2002.

That means that the administration would have known before the State of the Union address that the information was likely false - not just subsequently.

In fact, this may be a third source: Wilson, Wilkinson, and the source the BBC has at the CIA. All say the same thing: Bush knowingly lied during his State of the Union Speech.

5. it's real. BUSH IS A LIAR...and a KILLER people need to know.
I cannot rest until he is gone from the White HOuse. Really. I will probably become chronically ill if he steals another election and is around wrecking everything in his path.

10. Let's see a second source
before we start celebrating. I'll have my doubts about this story until I see it reported elsewhere. I spent an hour yesterday searching news sites and came up empty. Does anyone have any new info re this story to rpeort? If so, let's see it....
