Labels seek end to 99c music per song download
By Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco

Remember how online music stores were going to route around the music industry? The pigopolists have barely got their feet under the table and already demanding more. The Wall Street Journal reports that the major five labels think that 99 cents per song is too cheap, and are discussing a price hike that would increase the tariff to $1.25 up to $2.99 per song.

2. Always cutting off their noses to spite their faces
Or however you say it!

Bunch of idiots. Everyone started downloading because they are charging eighteen dollars for a CD that costs them 3.

3. Jesus - I already won't pay for downloaded songs because

I believe .99 is TOO MUCH! Way, WAY too much.

.05 per song would be more like it, and that's a high estimate in my opinion.

They don't have media costs, they don't have to pay for the case or for the liner notes to be printed. They don't have to pay for transportation to get to the marketplace, etc.

Those crazy RIAA folks - guess they won't be happy until they're out of business.

edited to add: they won't be happy until they're out of business, and will blame it all on filesharing. Fools - the lot of them.

4. They were lucky people were even paying 99 cents.
I wouldn't pay a penny for a download. I download CDs and if they good I go buy em. That's what .mp3 is for.

5. same with me
I'm a vinyl collector, so I'll always buy music even if I could get it all downloaded instantly. I still buy CDs sometimes though, and partially because of mp3s. Of course this is mostly non-RIAA stuff.

6. A while back
Mac World magazine published this article called "125 ways to save the internet", and one of the ways was to lower the downloading price from 99 cents to 29 cents. They said the music industry would make up the losses in volume.

I agree, I don't usually download music because I'm not sure if it's stealing or not, and I don't feel right about it. However, I'd gladly pay $1 for 3 songs so I could make my own 70's groove CDs.

7. I won't pay a penny for downloads
I can get them for free, and besides, I like having something tangible anyway. I'm a vinyl collector. If I buy a record and don't like it I could probably sell it on ebay for a fortune in 2 years anyway.

10. Simple solution: Boycott all major labels.
Don't download music (even for free), don't buy CDs. Show them how an entire industry can be crippled. And let them know it's due to their own arrogance and greed.

14. Probably.
That's why not downloading free music has to be part of the boycott.

15. The RIAA can shove it.
It'll be a cold day in Hell before I pay for my music. I'll never pay outrageous prices for a song. Instead, I'm gonna download my music for free.

17. Whatever
Most artists make their money from tour ticket sales & merchandise. Record companies keep the majority of the cash fom record sales except for really huge stars like Madonna, Prince, etc. They can take their $2.99 and go buy themselves a clue.

20. Welcome to DU, walmartsucks!
Personally, it's fine by me if the major labels want to strong-arm the prices of their artists' MP3 downloads upwards.

They'll only be speeding up the demise of the "traditional" music biz model, encouraging even more individual artists to start selling their music on their own web sites at their own prices, and effectively digging their own graves even faster than they already are.

And I mostly listen to indie-label artists anyway.

18. Amen about the Dead!!! What I can't get from the Dead sites,
I get from friends when I house sit for them...I cull their CD collections.

F**k the RIAA and the record companies. I REFUSE to pay $3.00 per song! .99 is reasonable and is what a 45 cost back in the day. I am using MY bandwidth and MY Internet connection that I pay for..they can go f**k themselves.

I have 2300 songs on my iPod and many more of my own CDs yet to put on it. I don't think I'll need to buy any songs for quite some time.
