Air America was GREAT today - and Randi is growing on me....
...big time, big time. :)

Al's show was just amazing for me - I was fascinated by his guest and discussion of the tax system. It was so good that I'd like to find an archived version of the show I could listen to again.

Randi Rhodes is growing on me by leaps and bounds. In my time zone, I get to listen to O'Franken and Randi at work. I'd really, really like to listen to The Majority Report more, but it comes on when I'm at home and I often can't.

Anyway, I really love Air American so far. I swear, I really would give anything if this thread didn't start a flame war, but I'm going to give my opinion anyway:

I really like the balance. I don't want all programming on AA to try to be a direct opposite of the screaming, bloviating, hateful insanity of Right Wing radio. I don't want every program to be aggressive. To me, I really enjoy the transition between the feel of Al's show (which I really enjoy in the morning) to the harder punch of Randi's show in the afternoon. I just wish Mike Malloy could get on there, that would add a little bit to the kick. But, like I said, I never, ever want AA to try to "mimic" right wing radio.

I want AA to continue to raise the bar and counter mindless insanity with sophisticated and thoughtful programming - that doesn't mean spineless, but it does mean intelligent. That's why I like Randi - because she's feisty, but yet very thoughtful in her commentary, from what I've heard. And I like Al's show, because while it is certainly lower key, I actually really enjoy that dynamic too and wouldn't want it to change.

2. I agree. I like it all.
I especially like "The Majority Report". Great guests, great talk. I have hardly watched TV since this station came on. Between AA and WBAI, I don't really have to. Color me happy.

3. Glad to hear it
I've been listening to Randi for a couple of years now
The best interview if you can find it archived somewhere
is when she interviewed olllie north.

I enjoy all the shows for different reasons .

4. Couldn't agree more.
It's every bit as good as some of the best moments on NPR, IMHO but with the added entertainment dimension that O'Franken brings to the medium. Admittedly, I've only heard Franken, Randi, and the news show right after Randi because those are the only ones that are on during my work hour (west coast).

But I have been loving Franken and Randi Rhodes. He's topical and funny and really offers up a delightful answer to the Rush/Hannity/Savage fare. And she is more along that shrill, level-10 style political punditry but she also translates on the medium because it comes across as GOOD RADIO.

There's bound to be a healthy contingency of highly demanding critics here at DU (and elsewhere) who are going to disagree with you here though, Sel. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. Nice post.

5. Register at Air America...
..it's painless, non-intrusive and FREE!! And there are links to their archives now!

IMO, Air America rocks! It looks as though they've added a couple of new shows to their lineup too...

I've been "lobbying" a local radio station here to carry AA, and I've heard that the owner is interested in playing selected shows before and/or after Rush... so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.... :-)

7. I'm developing a strong crush on Randi!
Don't tell her, okay?

You're right, Franken's guest on the tax system was informative. I'd love to hear more of that type of guest on the radio. Franken impresses me sometimes when he tackles a complicated, serious topic. He lets his guest develop the discussion, but he also stays involved. Like Peter Werbe at his best. Franken's scripted routines need to go, but his interviews (except that dittohead segment) are good.

18. last week
She went on a long rant about Iraq or 9-11, I forget which, and she fired off a series of facts, dates, names and events to prove her point, one after the other, like a machine gun shooting down enemy drones. Damn I love a woman who not only has something to say, but says it passionately, and with facts to prove it all!

Makes a good talk show host, too.

8. Agreed, AAR is great.
Today was the first full day to listen to it here at the moof hut &
it was very good. There were several points that were interesting & new.

The info about how the flat tax would result in rich people never paying taxes again after the first year was a real eyeopener, no wonder Forbes wanted it.

Randi's idea that the saudi's were helping out the terrorists to give them America to attack so as to keep them from attacking the Royalty there was an idea that was different.

Janeane's talk about the War rackett book & the previous attempted corporate coup was also new info for the moof hut.

Thanks to DU for the thread that informed about the AAR being available on real player.

12. I like it, too, Sel....
And I think they're getting their sea-legs now...sort of settling into their new station. And hell! They've only been on a couple of weeks! I think it's very admirable, and Franken has proven to be a quick study.

I'm very proud of the whole crew, and would LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT if Mike Malloy could get on there. That would round things out beautifully....strengten the whole set, I think.

When the wingnut stations start losing their listeners -- and there's a GREAT DEAL of pent-up market energy for sane radio -- I believe the entire media will start to get a clue, and we might get at least a modicum of balance from the others now and then. It actually seems like it's already happening.

Of course, they're trying to smear Franken and Rhodes right now, but I think it's only throwing more listeners our way....good publicity.

:kick:

15. Did Al move to 9 a.m. in L.A? Initially it was delayed until
noon but last week he said that they were going to go live. When I tuned in today, Chuck D and the two woman were on at noon (while on my way to work) so I missed hearing Al. I also now LOVE Randi. It only took me a couple of days to get used to her but now I think she's absolutely awesome. AA has exceeded my expectations by 100000000%!!! ...lovin' it!!!!!

21. YES! New Schedule, Clashes With Democracy Now :o(
I have the radio on most of the time in the morning, usually on Dem Now and then switch to Air Am at 10:00

The only things I don't like are the commercials. I used to listen to Pacifica most of the time, so I find the commercials distracting but I understand the need for them and try to patronize the sponsors.

16. I started to work out (radio on) since AA
and get out of the house more...Randi - my favorite, Al next. Love the sedition, Unfiltered as well. Majority report - only as good as their guests - brilliant with Atrios, less so with Amy Goodman - she reminded me all the reason I stay away from Pacifica.
She once hijacked our Not My president Day protest of the coup by speechifying about Gore losing, no difference and other nader/pacifica crap (their motto: "On election day, stay home, listen to us"). Tonight again - she couldn't refrain attacking democrats - not even as a guest of AA peddling her sorry book.

17. I agree, I've watched Goodman on FSTV and I don't like her style.
She has that educated, dry style that seems reminiscint of 70's radical chic. I'm sure she is very commited, but everything seems scripted and coded. Randi is like a street fighter that takes no prisoners. She's riffs off a stream-of-consciousness monologue. She's bombastic, opinionated, yet I think she draws people to our side more effectively than Goodman's style which seems to talk to the members only club.

Love Franken's show, too.

19. I have really been enjoying AirAmericradio, too. But,
Randi (I am a long time listener) has kinda got the big head. I think she will calm down soon. I love Al, but his partner, Lanphor, or whoever, has a fake laugh that bugs. Ok, that's the only complaints I have (not really worth bringing up), so, all in all, I love the shows.

He literally couldn't find a "family farm" that was saved by the "death tax" being repealed...it all was for the benefit of billionaires.

23. Randi is great.
I listen to her and Al at work. It's great. I like the way she doesn't take any crap from RW dittoheads. She seems very smart and very down-to-earth. You can get her archived MP3 shows at:

http://www.randirhodesarchives.com/

I haven't yet heard Janean's show, it's on too late for me to hear it at work. Does anyone know of an archive that's not in Real Audio format? (because real audio player truly sucks!)

24. I love Air America
and since radio in LA SUCKS!!!!!!!!, this is like manna from heaven... it's all I listen to and I listen to it cranked up LOUD!!

I finally heard Randi Rhodes on Sunday's rebroadcast.. I can see why she rubs some folks the wrong way, but all in all, she's got a style that cracks me up.

I loved the audio composite they did of 'Convoluted' Rice obfuscating and feigning ignorance at the 9/11 hearings last week.

Just the right amount of sarcasm and parody to make it too delicious for words!
