WASHINGTON - A public interest group yesterday asked Attorney General John Ashcroft to investigate whether U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (R., Pa.) violated federal bribery law by using his office to benefit two Russian firms and a Serbian foundation that hired his daughter as a lobbyist.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington asked that Ashcroft refer the case to investigators in the public integrity section of the Justice Department, which handles allegations of political corruption.
Melanie Sloan, executive director of the group, said the complaint is focused on a series of actions by Weldon on behalf of Itera International Energy Corp., Saratov Aviation, and two Serbian brothers. The two companies and a family foundation affiliated with the brothers each hired a public relations and lobbying firm owned by Weldon's daughter Karen, 29, and Charles P. In her letter to Ashcroft, Sloan said former U.S. Rep. Mario Biaggi (D., N.Y.) was convicted in a criminal bribery trial after prosecutors showed that he and his girlfriend had taken several trips paid for by a company on whose behalf Biaggi had written letters and taken other actions.
