6. What'd Veniste just refer to???
Some document that they just got last week that asscroft might want to review? Then something about he might want to enlighten himself but it can't be discussed because of national security?

Anyone else catch that or know what he's referring to??

WTF is "pulsing?"
When they have to make up verbs to sound like they were actually doing something, beware! This leaves his claim of involvement up to the listener, who will substitute his/her own definition of pulsing.

Food processors pulse. Blenders pulse. People pulsing conjures up a freak-assed image!

19. Ask Ashcroft about his DOJ budget priorites
"Counterterrorism was nowhere to be seen on Ashcroft's list of top priorities for the Justice Department. Ashcroft's May 2001 "budget goals memo" outlined the Attorney General's top seven priorities. Counterterrorism did not appear anywhere on the list. After 9/11, Ashcroft released a revised strategic goals memo in November 2001 that inserted a new priority at the top of the list – "Protect America Against the Threat of Terrorism."

Attorney General Ashcroft specifically cut counterterrorism spending prior to 9/11. Justice Department documents released by American Progress reveal that in August 2001, the FBI specifically requested additional resources to bolster counterterrorism resources. In response, Ashcroft actually cut counterterrorism funding in critical areas including equipment grants, border control, and the National Domestic Preparedness Office. Our new analysis reveals the 2002 counterintelligence budget proposed by Ashcroft cut counterintelligence spending by more than $476 million – a 23 percent decline from 2001 funding levels.

36. CBS News: 'Ashcroft Flying High' 7/26/01
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/07/26/national/main303601.shtml

Ashcroft Flying High
WASHINGTON, July 26, 2001

Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

A senior official at the CIA said he was unaware of specific threats against any Cabinet member, and Ashcroft himself, in a speech in California, seemed unsure of the nature of the threat.

"I don't do threat assessments myself and I rely on those whose responsibility it is in the law enforcement community, particularly the FBI. And I try to stay within the guidelines that they've suggested I should stay within for those purposes," Ashcroft said.

Asked if he knew anything about the threat or who might have made it, the attorney general replied, "Frankly, I don't. That's the answer."

Earlier this week, the Justice Department leased a NASA-owned G-3 Gulfstream for a 6-day trip to Western states. Such aircraft cost the government more than $1,600 an hour to fly. When asked whether Ashcroft was paying for any portion of the trips devoted to personal business, a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to respond.

All other Bush Cabinet appointees, with the exception of Interior and Energy with remote sites to oversee, fly commercial airliners. Janet Reno, Ashcroft's predecessor as attorney general, also routinely flew commercial. The secretaries of State and Defense traditionally travel with extra security on military planes.

The Justice Department insists that it wasn't Ashcroft who wanted to fly leased aircraft. That idea, they said, came strictly from Ashcroft's FBI security detail. The FBI had no further comment.

He'd let Ashcroft hang himself first.

But I tend to doubt there was much to it (CBS article aside), unless someone can produce the actual threat assessment and show that he did change his plans based on it (as in actual flight records, etc.).

61. Reno FY2000 counterterrorism performance plan
http://www.justice.gov/ag/annualreports/summary2000/part1.htm
Reducing Espionage and Terrorism

DOJ's FY 2000 performance plan maintains a strong focus on pursuing the early detection, investigation, and prosecution of terrorist conspiracies, and responding to terrorist acts, including cyberterrorism. There will be a prompt, aggressive, and fully-coordinated response to all terrorist acts directed against Americans, their interests or the National Information Infrastructure, including those located or originating from abroad. Consistent with legislative mandates and related Presidential directives, DOJ and its components coordinate with other Executive Branch agencies in these efforts. For all overseas-based incidents, particular liaison occurs with the Department of State. As another example, the National Defense Authorization Act of 1996 provided funding and a training mandate to assist State and local authorities in the proper response to a terrorist incident. The FBI participates with the Departments of Defense, Energy, Health and Human Services and the Environmental Protection Agency in the development and delivery of this training.

Key features of the DOJ FY 2000 performance plan will strengthen the Nation's response capability to terrorist episodes. Specifically, DOJ will work through the FBI, the U.S. Attorneys' Offices, OJP, and the Department's Criminal Division to establish or expand partnerships with state, local and international entities to better respond to domestic terrorist acts, cyberattacks and other threats. OJP's role in domestic preparedness is discussed under Core Function 2.

Recognizing the threat of terrorist acts to critical infrastructure, such as the information highway, power systems and transportation networks, the Attorney General created the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC). In FY 2000, through the NIPC, DOJ will further our capabilities to coordinate and respond to the cyber and physical threats targeted at key infrastructure assets by operating the center 24-hours per day, 7-days per week.

FY 2000 Key Performance Goal FY 2000 Key Performance Indicators

It sounded like it was soft-balled, from a Repub-friendly member, but also like he issued an unequivocal denial anyway.

97. if he never stopped using commercial aircraft
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 04:04 PM by RedSock
if he never stopped using commercial aircraft and the answer is so simple, why did he storm out of his office when he was asked about it?

In May 2002 its claimed the threat assessment had nothing to do with al-Qaeda, but Ashcroft walked out of his office rather than answer questions about it.
AP at FoxNews
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,52982,00.html

Also from that story: "Since July 2001, Ashcroft has typically flown aboard an FBI jet or aboard other jets leased by U.S. agencies, although he occasionally has traveled on commercial flights, such as during a recent trip to Trinidad, Corallo said."

He's parsing personal v business!!!!!!!!!

100. What was the nature of the threat assessment?
Was there a threat assessment or wasn't there? All Ashcroft did was confuse me. If there was a threat assessment but he continued flying on commercial planes on personal business was the threat a lie? If it was a lie or not to be taken seriously, then why did he officially stop flying commercial planes on official government business?

What exactly was the threat?
Who told him about the threat?
When was he first told?
What memo or document on what date from what person ordered him to stop flying commercially?
Let's get the text of that memo!!!

How is this issue resolved?

I'd like to use the word "lie" but it's clear Ashcroft has been schooled about his opening statement that there wasn't a standing order from the Clinton administration to kill Bin Laden.

Edit: spelling
