Oklahoma Moves To Limit Gay Adoption

(Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) The Oklahoma Senate has passed legislation requiring birth certificates issued to children adopted by same-sex couples outside the state to carry only the name of one parent.

The move follows a controversy last month in which the Oklahoma Health Department refused to issue a birth certificate for a child adopted by a gay couple who live in Seattle, Washington.

Gregory Hampel and Edmund Swaya requested the new birth certificate for their two year old daughter Vivian listing both of their names to ensure that if anything happened to one of the men the other would retain custody of the child. (story)

The Health Department relented after Lambda legal threatened to go to court.

Oklahoma law already prohibits same-sex adoptions in the state, but the state Attorney General said Oklahoma's adoption code requires the state to recognize out-of-state adoption decrees involving gay couples.

That seems pretty ridiculous. So if one parent died, the other would lose custody automatically? Can't they do something to get around that? (not that they should have to, but just in case?)

and you hit the nail on the head.....all of this backlash against gay rights is just fear. Flat-out, old-fashioned FEAR.

This is particularly bad because it denies gay and lesbian parents the right to protect the custody of their children.

Absolutely ridiculous and yet another thing to fight.

It just boggles the mind.

Because, obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

Every time I think my home state couldn't possibly do anything to be more embarrassing,they up and prove me wrong. :eyes:
