Suggestions for preventing a freeper conversion.
My girlfriend's sister has just started dating this right-wing idiot. This guy is a teacher, and works another job on the side, while living with his parents just to make ends meet. But, he is a republican (i have no idea why).

The problem is, he is converting my potential sister-in-law into republicanism. I need to stop this, fast. Do any of you have any ideas on how to prevent her from joining the dark side. Perhaps a list of reasons not to be a right winger would be good.

Thanks DUers.

2. One word:
EVIL!!!

That's all she needs to know...haha. I suppose you could go further in depth, if you had the time and patience.

3. Sorry. Biology often trumps politics.
Like born-again Christianity, it will wear off in about 3 1/2 years.
Be patient.

6. lol... thats true
I could always take comfort in that... the thing is... he might screw her over after they get married and have a couple of kids. Don't want that.

7. I'll second the Franken book.
It seems to work where some of the others don't. The humor I guess.

8. I think an important part of countering right-wing propaganda...
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 06:26 PM by LoZoccolo
...is the fact that it sets the people that parrot it up for embarassment. Like if she brings something up to you, you shouldn't just counter it, but if it's something that's almost on-it's-face absurd, go back and be like "seems like this was set up to trick people". It helps to know about stuff like the think-tanks that come out with the talking points and stuff too, you can point out that the Republicans have this big propaganda machine - people don't like to be an agent of a big propaganda machine. Blinded by the Right and What Liberal Media? have a lot of stuff about that, and there's probably been some more books put out since those were big.

11. same thing happened with my sister
she was the world's biggest Clinton fan and very liberal, then she started dating a very conservative evangelical Christian. Now she's married to him, goes to lectures on the greatness of Bush, is a born-again who scoffs at the mere mention of evolution, and lectures me on how I will go to hell.

I am very sorry about this.

All I know is that if I have kids, the indoctrination/education starts from day one. Don't let them get away.

15. Why?
Adults should be able to make up their own minds. Only children need direction. Teach your children well.
