Jews and Christians" may be seen as a religious line in the sand, as a fatwah in Islamic terms. This is very dangerous and very reckless.

And it is a jarring turn from his assurance that this is not a religious war.

The reality on the ground and the local perception is the problem here, and he hasn't a clue.
