Clearly The Poorest Performance By An American President Of All Time
I have never seen as poor an appearance by a President of the United States of America in my 57 years. That man is beyone impeachment. He should be exiled.

Is such pure, unadulturated stupidity a "high crime and misdemeanor?"

That's a very interesting question.

16. You didn't watch the same press conference I did
That was the worst performance I've ever seen by a POLITICIAN in my life, never mind by a pResident!

Did you not notice how his voice went up an octave while his pacing tripled? Squeezed by fear and uncertainty, he sputtered through...

...this is leadership? Our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves!

This is the man with his finger on the button, someone who controls a security budget that tops (now) $400 billion yearly. Sadly, the mediawhores were spinning positively, and the Coulterites will be proud of the "man" who stood up to the "evil" of elementary but honest questioning.

"May you live in interesting times" goes a Confuscian curse. Sadly, we do. We do.

25. people are used to seeing this sort of performance from Bush
He is not a real good speaker and that is what they are used to seeing from him.

What he did tonight was repeat his Image Mantra words:

FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE
FREEDOM AMERICAN OBLIGATION GATHERING THREAT STAY THE COURSE

That works pretty well for getting across to most Americans who are not paying that much attention. And it works well for soundbites. From that perspective, Bush did fine.

You guys have to remember the framework here.

41. I highly doubt people are "used to seeing this sort of performance"
Bush has only had 3 prime time news conferences, so how could anyone be used to seeing this?

I watched the whole thing, uncharacteristically for me. (Normally I can't stand to even listen to the guy.)

The speech at the beginning was delivered in a very uninspiring and droning fashion. The Q&A started off decently for Bush, but after he got one question about not admitting mistakes, he started rambling on and on about very little. And that was his pattern for the entire last half-hour. Avoid the question and ramble on in a barely coherent way. every once in a while remembering to insert his talking points (the only moments of clarity).

It was extremely unimpressive from someone in the position he is in. Even with the low expectations I, of course, had.

43. I was in shock
I honestly thought we were moments from a shriek and mad dash out of the room. Several posters tonight question Bush's mental health, and I agree; he appeared and sounded very depressed, anxious -- he had to marshall every last drop of psychic energy to get back in rhythm (near the end). But I grant you your admonition. We did not witness enough to guarantee an electoral victory. We have hard work to do.

We face: A near-monopolized rightwing media who will spin that Bush spoke with eloquent confidence; we have Diebold to worry about; and the $200 million spin of the Rovian Wurlitzer. Plus there will be the series of October Surprises (OBL, the discovery of planted WMD). And worse, we have Tommy Franks' words, we may not even have an election this year.

But I gotta' think the powers that stand behind Bush are having second thoughts tonight.

I thought there was no way he could be elected after that. None. He turned into a two-termer. Scary. The spinning I saw after that debate was much like the spinning I saw tonight. Reagan was obviously not in full control of his faculties and Chimp is clearly not that bright. Yet the media doesn't appear to notice. Go figger.

That was, without a doubt, the worst public speaking performance I have ever seen by ANY peron of authority. Business, academic, political - the WORST.

How anyone could watch that and not see a man struggling to avoid answering questions is beyond me. I'd like to hear our resident body language experts weigh in - my impression was that he was clearly shaken by the questions and cognizant of his ineptitude.

I'm so very glad DU is here, because there seems to be a huge disconnect in the media. I understand that one must be suitably "respectful" of the President, but really...that was one of the most deeply troubling performances I've ever seen (and I've been a Democrat all my life; my earliest memories as a child were my parents working locally in John Kennedy's campaign).

My husband said, "That made me want to go stand on a corner with a sign" and he isn't very political. The headlines should scream tomorrow, " President refuses to admit any errors, won't appologize." That was the biggest shock to me, how he truly could not admit to making a mistake. And it pissed me off that he said suggesting Iraq was another Vietnam gave aide to our enemies and hurt our troops. . . . but it may offer a frame of context for explaining furthur operations there.

"We're changing the world."

"It's Americas destiny to spread God given freedoms (sic)"

"In addition to Iraq. We're also fighting world hunger and AIDS. (sic)"

Chimpy was linking Iraq to other attempts at making the world more "free" and a "better place." This makes it easier to defend action in Iraq for the Repugs.

59. wow-I am scared for 2 reasons
1. he seems very depressed-incoherent (i haven't seen this since Nixon's last days)-there was no logic to his thought-he would trail off-then get real egotistical(I,me never make mistakes)
2. the media (msnbc was really bad-matthews and fineman did not see what we saw) is portraying this well-i mean beyond partisan politics this was downright scary-how come they didn't see what we saw?
We are in deep crap my friends-Kerry really has to win-I think Bush may crack up before the election though

60. Andy Card, Condiliar and Karl Rove, all had pained looks throughout
the press conference. To watch them grimace, you would have thought Chimpy was performing a high wire act without a net.

67. I swear I heard Dick Cheney
He was standing behind the curtain, and after *'s little "brown-skinned people" comment, the sound of his hand slapping his forehead was clearly audible.

69. Incoherence is contagious.....
The flashing signal of the Tie That Bewilders Minds has damaged your cognitive powers; let's hope it's not permanent.

He brought the country into a recession; unemployment & the deficit continue to grow. He's led us into two wars; we won't be "through" them for a long time.

After receiving numerous warnings of attacks on America, possibly involving hijacking ("conventional" or otherwise), his performance on 9/11 was shameful. He walked into a silly photo-op KNOWING that multiple planes had been hijacked & one had hit the WTC. He heard of the second hit but did not interrupt the lesson. Then he fled.

But we're talking about his performance last night. He was incoherent & failed to answer one question satisfactorily.

Get well soon.

70. It's a pretty pathetic even match
with his post-9/11 conference. My gosh, remember that one? Crop dusters...evil doers...smoke them out of their caves...he got a huge break from a largely still shocked nation. I recall that resulting in one of the liveliest and wittiest DU threads however...

72. Wow--I pick up one very key thing from these posts
(I didn't watch because I can't stand him)but I see that the views here are that 1) he did his usual 'suck' and 2) the media analysis afterward was that he was passionate, resolved, etc. RING ANY BELLS?? This is the same shit they said after each of his debate performances in 2000 instead of an honest evaluation of "what the fuck is something that pathetic doing in a presidential race!!??". Therefore, folks, you have the already pre-written analysis that you are going to hear after the 2004 debates: George=firm, strong, visionary; Kerry=snob with no ideas on how to lead.

76. You're absolutely right.
I watched almost all of the press conference (darn, I missed the "something will pop into my head" blurb!), and was absolutely dumbfounded that the media I watched afterwards (Jim Lehrer, Brooks, Oliphant) were so gracious in their critique of the Q&As. I think the media/press are simply too close to the people they are covering. They are looking and listening for certain/specific things from a press conference, and those things are not the same things that Joe & Jan Doe Americans are looking and listening for.

Bush was asked several times whether he felt he should apologize (like Clarke did) for either 9/11 or the invasion of Iraq, and every single time he evaded the question. Brooks and Oliphant said that this is just an example of a "vague question getting a vague answer." Bullshit! It's an honest question that demands and deserves an honest answer.

And what is this new verbage: change the world, and war footing. Since when is it America's job to change the world???

73. The Absolute Worst Performance
I try so hard not to let my left leanings effect my objectivity. I mean, I'm always checking myself to make sure that my "passions don't override my reason." But, please...this was absolutely the worst presidential news conference that I have ever seen. I mean, there were times when I was saying to myself...Oh, my God!

I think when he starting stumbling around concerning what "mistakes" he might have possibly made...comments like "Gee, I wish I would have had this question in advance" or "It's hard to come up with something when you're in front of a group like this" or "Something usually comes to me, but..." etc.etc. I mean, this is unbelievable.

I'm 51 years old...and I'm astonished that someone of such little intellect and poise can rise to the highest office in the land. How could something like this happen?!!

By the way...how does one go about starting a new thread???

-Paige

74. Yes, he talked about the "pressure" as if that was something
a president didn't/shouldn't have to face. GMAFB.
