"My President, right or wrong"
Those of us old enough to have lived through the political divide over Vietnam remember well the slogan "My country, right or wrong." I'm almost nostalgic for it, considering that its current debased equivalent seems to be"My President, right or wrong."

Consider Bush's peroration tonight: "One thing is for certain, though, about me, and the world has learned this: When I say something, I mean it."

He's right, and if 50% of the American people (or fewer, thanks to the wonders of the electoral college) think that's the most important feature in a president, Bush will be re-elected in 2004.

When, oh when, did Americans decide that intractability is the chief virtue?

4. Is it live, or is it Memorex?

I'm not sure when these conservative smegma are going to realize it, but Americanism is about allegience to the spirit of the Constitution and Democracy. When the policies of "My President" or "My Country" are in conflict, they are what has to go.

My only hope is that, if those 50% of us who are Dems remain so, there will be enough backlash from the 2000 election fraud, and enough dissatisfaction with 4 years of outright criminal behavior, to put Kerry in the White House.

I just wish there was enough outrage left to try these thugs for crimes against the Constitution.

5. I'm not buying that
He almost never does what he says, he almost never says what he did, he won't say anything under oath - who cares if he "means it" when he brain farts? Not me.

6. Because they were Xtians, when Xtians weren't cool.
Evangelical Xtians, that is. Now, between Bush and his intellectual superior Jessica Simpson, they are finally getting the attention they feel they deserve.

7. President or "president"

When Gen. MacAuthur disobeyed direct orders and got fired, Harry Truman said something like "That SOB can disrespect me, but he sure as hell will not disrespect the President of the United States!".

I have no problem calling W a chimp, or an idiot, or even a deserter...but I still respect the office.
