Just need a reality check, here. Was that political suicide or what?? Where did he pick up that phrase? Are there people around him who talk about "brown-skinned" people?

WTF?

11. CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT
"Some of the debate really center around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free. I strongly disagree with that. I reject that..."

I've challenged a freeper board to come up with a single person who believes that "that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free."

I'm still waiting for reply, of course!

3. Yes, he did; wasn't that a pip?
Another reason why they never let this idiot go off script. I thought that was a jaw-dropper. I can't remember the exact wording, but he was saying something to the effect that some people thought that Muslims and brown skinned people were incapable of democracy, but that he didn't share this opinion.

Somebody needs to ask him who "these people" are that say things like this, and ask him why he listens to them.

Please find the exact quote, somebody, I'd love to have that on tap.

He talked about how some thought that "brown-skinned" people couldn't govern themselves, but then magnanimously stated that he rejected that idea.

Wow, awfully white of you, George.

and here is the quote:
Some of the debate really center around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free. I strongly disagree with that. I reject that, because I believe that freedom is the deepest need of every human soul, and, if given a chance, the Iraqi people will be not only self-governing, but a stable and free society.

Some of the debate really centers around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing or free. I'd strongly disagree with that.

20. Damn-I had forgotten about his dad's comment.
Ignorant man. Ignorant men. This is just another buzz-phrase. Like the thinly-veiled accusation of the statement he made about people that equate Iraq and Viet Nam, that it hurts the soldiers and gives "comfort" to the enemy. You know, in other words, you're not a patriot if you say these things. Or if you disagree about Iraq, it's because you are a racist. This ought to be a beautiful campaign.

He said in context (I'm paraphrasing), 'many people don't believe that Muslims or brown people want to live in harmony'. He said it.. he said it.. Along with 'I know it's not pleasant to see dead people on t.v.'. He said that!! He said that about OUR military killed over there. DEAD PEOPLE!!!! What a fucking idiot!

And.. he reprised his famous line about grieving families.. 'I con.. con.. con... console them, and it's a time to hug, and cry, and console'.

we only bomb "brown-skinned" people - we all laugh, even though it hurts. When Bush said some people think "brown-skinned" people can't govern themselves, but he believes they can, it's a sacrilege. There was a lot more going on tonight to pounce on than that.

30. My husband and I say stuff like that all the time.
"Oh, what? They think they can't do this, or that, or they deserve bombing, or don't need AIDS medicine, or malaria medicine because they're brown-people?" We, just like Bush, are referring to the way some people, supposedly, view brown people. (Of course, Bush might want to look in the mirror, since he has bombed and withheld medicine from brown people.)

I don't have to defend anybody for saying anything. There were enough big bones to pick in tonight's news conference for us all to have a full meal without have to revert to nit-picking the "race card."

Oh, and before you play that card on me... my husband's black.

32. Why did the POTUS bring up skin color?
Skin color has absolutely nothing to do with anything, and for the POTUS to bring up skin color in front of the world is incomprehensible. You and your husband can bandy about the color of peoples skin all you want, I don't mind and wouldn't dream of stopping you or speaking out against you for saying "brown-skinned" people in any context, it really doesn't matter. But the POTUS, that's a whole different ball game.

IMO, for what it's worth.

some people think they can't govern themselves because they're brown-skinned, but he disagrees with that. If I have to find the exact quote I will, but there really are brown skinned people in the world and pink ones, too. Pretending we're all the same color, or have no color, is ridiculous and not being able to speak about differences is even more silly and is very oppressive. Being "color-blind" doesn't mean being blind and political correctness does nothing but hide what people really think. I'd rather know and I'd rather be able to talk about it, not pretend race and racism don't exist. That's MHOP.

22. ... and don't forget this gem
During a chat between the American
president George W Bush ....and
Fernando Henrique Cardoso (of Brazil),
Bush suddenly burst out with the
question: "Do you have blacks, too?"
Rice, his national security advisor
rescued the situation by explaining,
"Mister President, Brazil probably
has more blacks than the USA. Outside
of Africa, it has more blacks than
any other country in the world."
Cardoso reasoned afterwards that
where Latinamerica is concerned,
Bush is still in the "learning stage."

They know that he doesn't care a bit about "brown people."
They know that it is just a game for Hispanics and other minorities to believe that he really cares about people that are brown.

I'm Brown and I KNOW for a fact that he doesn't care about me or my people!

His base is smart. They know he will "SATWIN" = Say Any Thing To Win In November. And to them, that win is all that matters.

25. Some people believe....
that if you live in a trailer you must be lazy, uncultured trash. Is Bush going to bring this up in his next economic policy speech?

Bush says "I strongly disagree with that." The "that" is "the fact that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free."

I think the majority of the world's population could be considered "brown-skinned," including me. The whole things strikes me as kind of condescending and way too broad.
