Hundreds of thousands of Conservatives, who embraced that philosophy with idealism and passion, for the well-thought-out ideas and principled stances they took, are feeling the first pangs of the Dark Night of their Souls.
As Conservatism is to the Ten Commandments, Neo-Conservatism is to the Golden Calf. So they wait, huddling in fear of the morning when God will judge.
There may be ten "Freepers" to every one of these Conservatives. But in the end, there won't even be one in ten Conservatives left -- only a remnant of shocked and depressed stalwarts left to wonder how the hell the disease of Neo-Conservatism could have spread so fast and so far.
They see the vultures circling ... first for the liberals about to be sacrificed to the idol ... later, for the main feast, the ripened and felled body of Conservatism, lying dead, fouled in its own vomit and diarrhea, the corpse bruised purple from unbearable seizures and hemorragic fever, and bloating up as the first flush of putrefactive bacteria run riot through their new world of dead flesh and lost hopes.
Once a beloved child, no one will come to claim the remains. No one will remember the departed, except for the vultures, who will remember it in the fat insulating their bodies for the winter. Only the clean and bleached skeleton will endure, silent, anonymous, a mute warning of an unidentified danger from a soulless time.
