Darfur Update
Essentially the same post as yesterday--trying to make sure people are aware.

Latest news is that the cease fire is not holding, EU forces may intervene.

APF report

Beeb Story. The bbc has very good coverage of Sudan.

Recently the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs revised its estimated need. story from Reuters, or from the horse's mouth, with a link to the full report.

Following are stories from the UN wire citing or corrobating Mukesh Kapila, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan. He called it a grave humanitarian crises and warned of a campaign of ethnic cleansing.

Here's an interview with Dr. Sulaf al-Din Salih, the commissioner-general of Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission. It contradicts other reports by reputable observers.

This is a story from UN OCHA about people being displaced in Darfur.

The unhcr on Chad.

1. I detest the phrase "ethnic cleansing"
Why on earth do they say this when what they mean is genocide?

I don't think reporters should repeat it, it's prejudicial and innaccurate and I can't believe how many times I have seen it in headlines.

Thanks for the links.

3. I'm not sure I understand your objection
I'd presume the main difference would be that "ethnic cleansing" refers to a policy of removing a particular ethnic group from a particular place, whereas "genocide" may refer to an overarching strategy or goal of extermination which transcends geopolitical boundaries.

Can you explain your objections more fully?
