Did anyone go crazy after the "Almighty" comment?
He just couldn't resist getting his God pitch into his speech. I'm so sick and tired of having dubya's stupid God comments shoved down my throat. He's a preacher, not a president.

1. theocracy
You have to understand - the only people really standing with him still are hardcore theocrats, hate-filled warmongers, and wealthy corporate vultures. Praising the almighty for him is catering to his base.

7. Scalia's formulation, isn't it?
Freedom comes from god, therefore there is a basis for religion in govt., something like that. Forget that the great American experiment was the creation of men employing Enlightenment principles and trying to keep religion and govt. separate.

Very scary shit.

I think Bush's only problem with a theocratic state in Iraq is that it would not be based on the christian religion.

"For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forbears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago."

26. I was here. I remember it well.
JFK was among many US Presidents who have had religious beliefs. All of them respected the barrier between Church & State--JFK especially.

None of them pandered to the theocrats like Bush Jr.

Didn't the country have a big problem with Kennedy as a Catholic - some fear of having to go through the Pope to have decisions made?

27. Praemunire
The big difference between Kennedy and Bush is that Kennedy didn't try to dismantle the Bill of Rights while fighting off the red menace of communism.

He, at least, had a respect for the well documented intent of the authors of the consitution. He didn't try to rewrite history and put words in their mouths or thoughts in their heads.

30. Actually the problem was bigger before Kennedy
who managed to defuse the issue enough to get elected. Outside of Al Smith in 1928 - had any other Catholic run for president?

Much to Martin Luther King, Jr's chagrin, Martin Luther King Sr. made the statement that he'd vote for Kennedy though he never thought he'd see the day he'd vote for a Catholic (this was after Kennedy stepped in to get MLK out of jail or something - I forget what exactly).

Kennedy's reply to this was "Well, we all have fathers."

10. When you can't hide behind the flag any longer...
Try to hide behind God. Classic right-wing political tactic whenever they find themselves fingered on something wrong. But Dub can only "hide behind God" to those as delusional as he--and soon, he'll have nowhere to hide!

I do wonder about one thing, however: why do his handlers even allow Dub to hold press conferences? He makes Ronald Reagan's press appearances look positively articulate by comparison. Ronnie couldn't think on his feet; Dub can't even THINK!:eyes:

B-)

11. Preaching
For a guy who was scolded for talking about a "crusade" in the Middle East, he hasn't learned his lesson.

Unfortunately, religion is the least of the things being shoved down our throats. He only mentions God because it reinforces to his followers that he was chosen to rid the world of tyranny.

16. RE: Preaching
The only way the world will be rid of tyranny is to be rid
of scumbags like Bush. I think that speech and news conference shows us exactly what kind of president Bush is. Incompetent, bumbling, know nothing, accept no responsibility and still lying through his teeth to name a few of his shortcomings.

The American people should be ashamed of themselves for allowing
this bumbling, don't give a damn, arrogant, know nothing to stay
in office for the length of time that he has. It's about time
that everyone quits making excuses for this little boy man who
will never accept responsibility for his own actions or
inactions. How utterly embarassing & dangerous for this nation.

There's another thread someplace around here that discusses how several of W's comments were references to Old Testament prophecies, that would resonate with Christian fundamentalists.

I never doubt that there is a subtext to W's comments about God. He's talking straight to his core supporters.

28. I certainly reacted
But alas there is not much we can do about it. We can let people know it bothers us when our government officials make such proclomations. He certainly violate any church/state issues. He is a free man with his own rights to believe things as he chooses. As long as he is speaking for his own beliefs and not the countries he is free to say he is the Easter Bunny if he chooses to. But it is discrimination. It does divide our nation. And it was wrong for him to have included it.

31. God/GW Bush
GW Bush keeps saying the Freedom and Democracy is a gift from the Almighty. It is America's duty to spread Democracy. The people in Iraq who are resisting Occupation are now considered enemies of Freedom and Democracy. These people are called insurgents, rebels, terrorists, thugs and gangsters. It seems that GW Bush's God is alright with killing these people and/or incarcerating them. God is on America's side because America stands for Freedom and Democracy and all those that do not agree shall be killed or imprisoned if they openly resist. God is on America's side and America's plan for their country. Anyone that does not not believe this must not believe in God, Freedom or Democracy.

37. Didn't bother me in the least
Read the the last two sentences in the first paragraph of Bill Clinton's first Inaugural Address:

"When our founders boldly declared America's independence to the world, and our purposes to the Almighty, they knew that America, to endure, would have to change. Not change for change sake, but change to preserve America's ideals: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness."

Now read the last two sentences of the speech:

"We have heard the trumpets, we have changed the guard, and now each in our own way, and with God's help, we must answer the call.

Thank you, and God bless you all."

38. Only bothered me because I percieve his piety to be all for show; he
talks the talk but surely does not walk the walk, when it comes to policies and beliefs and substance.
It's pure political pandering and posturing. If he does have any genuine religious belief, it is more akin to the Pharisees than Jesus, just like almost all the RW fundie Christians.
