Annoying AAR comercials
Does anyone find the ad for "Embeded" as abrasive and obnoxious as I do? I have to turn my radio off when it comes on. Can they do another that actually tells what the play is about and this time without the Dennis O'Leary impersonator doing the voiceover?

Also not a huge fan of the PSA with who I assume is MC Hammer.

I guess beggers can't be choosers, but thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

1. I am SO sick of the AAR commercials
I listened pretty much non-stop the first few days.

I am SO sick of that "Embedded" commercial, the forest-fire-ordering-lunch commercial, the "back pat", "Son, you're so proud... That was a great test...", the sandwich delivery guy teaching his son about least-common denominators, the Dave Chapelle commercial...

I feel that as a frequent listener, I should be REWARDED - not punished. I shouldn't have my sanity bludgeoned to death because I listen to AAR a lot.

I hope they do something about this soon. At least record some alternate commercials for the same advertiser. Frequent listeners shouldn't be punished.

3. If AirAmerica is successful...
...you'll end up listening to LOTS of annoying commercials. It is the advertisers and sponsors that keep radio stations alive unless they are publicly owned. Listening to a few annoying commercials is a small price to pay to have this station exist. You all should make the adjustment now because, I repeat, if AAR succeeds it will be with the help of LOTS of annoying commercials.

5. I realize that the sponsors are the life blood of the station...
but do they have to be so damn annoying? I don't mind the products or services being advertised, just the way in which they are.

Also the Mega Money or whatever magazine that promises to tell us how to make and spend mega bucks ad is annoying.

20. when is an ad not annoying?
That's the point of them, to annoy you into a coma so you can buy more bleech.

At least many of AAR's comicerals have a point. And the "back pat" and fire stuff are public service announcements. How many public service announcements occur on Rush's show, and how many of them focus on parental involvement in children's lives?

If you really want vapid advertising, tune into Faux...

4. Any info regarding the effect of webcast on advertising stats?
I'm curious as to whether the listeners via webcast are considered in evaluating the station vis-a-vis advertising statistics.

Also the ad for Give Kids the World where the Richard Dreyfus sounding guy says "and unlimited ice-cream" with a trembling voice drives me round the bend.

I actually enjoy that ad for "embedded" it's got a great flow aand sounds good to me. It's like a song or something. The Airforce reserve ads are the ones that stick out to me. What fool would sign up up during this administration.

I'm a Rage Against the Machine fan, so the "Embedded" commercial doesn't annoy me nearly as much as most of the rest of them:

- I still have no idea why the concept of odd and even is a philosophical illusion, and I was a math minor.

- It's not that hard to go to a community college and work toward a teaching certificate.

- What is the point of advertising a brand new Chris Rock special using jokes from almost ten years ago?

- The horrific scream of the little girl getting her arm torn off by the wild animal.

- The Muzak guitar riff that plays in the background of the progressive business magazine ad.

money money money. if they think they can reach people they will pay for adds. if anything they are getting more publicity due to AAR and our discussion of their annoying commercials.

13. i for one
do not mind the PSAs at all. i'd much rather hear a PSA than some stupid annoying corporate america crap (and yes i'm aware that hearing stupid lame corporate america ads would mean the network is successful, i'm just saying as far as tone and volume and annoyance is concerned, i'd much rather hear a PSA.)

25. hehe... that's not so easy to explain...
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 11:21 AM by apnu
...honestly, because many mathematical theologians argue that odd and even doesn't really exist. or that what we commonly think of odd and even is wrong. mostly (in the science commercial on AAR w/ the little girl) the "odd and even" thing is a mathematical philosophical argument.

there are special properties to even numbers. They can always be divided by two, if you square a negative number it will always be positive (the act of squaring is doubling the number so the exponent is an even number), you can't have a negative square root (square roots are even although the number being "rooted" may be odd) And by that thought if the index of a rooted number (that's the number inside the little check mark of the root symbol, but not the big digit underneath of the root symbol) is even it can't be even and have a negative radicand. And continuing the thought of square roots, when you find a square root, say 64 = 8, technically you don't know if the 8 is positive. So you'd have to answer that the square root of 64 equals + or - 8 Because -8*-8-= 64 and 8*8= 64.

And there are special properties to odd numbers. a cubed negative number (raising a number to the power of 3) will always give you a negative number: -1 * -1 * -1 = -1 And so, a cubed root can have a negative radicand.

But none of this explains "even and odd" as a concept... it does explain special properties of groups numbers, but the concept is pretty arbitrary. Kinda like heads and tails really doesn't explain the two sides of a coin, but the heads side has a head on it for no other reason but tradition because, "heads and tails" is a very old phrase. I'm sorry if that's a muddy analogy... I'm just trying to reach the connection of language and thought and how they inter-mesh with each other and affect each other's outcomes. Language influences thought and thought influences language. And it's very hard to separate the two into nice and neat definitions.

(on edit: typos)

23. I Would LOVE To Hear One Right Now In L.A. :o(
I can stream it but I really don't have long periods of time to sit by the computer -- plus, four of us share one computer so I'm only on it for 2 or 3 minutes at a time usually.

I had Air AM it on all day, especially in the car, I MISS AIR AMERICA SO BAD!! EVEN AN "IMBEDDED" COMMERCIAL WOULD SOUND GREAT TO ME AT THE MOMENT!

Boy I hope they work this out soon cuz I'm seriously jonz-in' out here.

I hope just a few of you that still get AA appreciate what you got. I work in a artist studio where I can't stand by the computer to listen for long. I guess it's back to dull boring NPR.
