Poll question: Kerry is not an anti-war candidate. Is this news to you?
Kerry has never portrayed himself as 'anti-war', absolutely opposed to military force, advocating immediate withdrawal from Iraq, neither has he ever locked himself into an inflexible position as to what strategy or tactics the troops in Iraq should use.

When someone posts a breathless 'expose' of Kerry here at DU, pointing this out, and condemning Kerry because he isn't 'anti-war' enough, does it add to your understanding of the world?

1. There are reasons that many of us wanted someone else.
But now we've got Kerry, and we (and arguably the country) live or die with him. Any questions?

2. John Kerry's never run as an "Anti-Iraq War candidate"...
Nor made any pretentions to be one. Anyone who says he has is merely parroting a "Chip" Rove-invented lie.

What I'd like to see Kerry do more of, however, is to highlight the scurillous mistreatment the veterans of this sick, needless war are getting from Dub & Co. Being a vet himself--and of a war in which many of his fellow vets were also mistreated and ignored upon their return home--that needs to be a prime talking point for him in the area of Iraq-related issues, and vociferouosly so.

B-)

3. News flash!!!
He's not staunchly anti-war because *gasp* he's trying not to piss off all the formerly pro-war voters who might be wavering and/or will vote on the economy instead!!! He may not win a DU popularity contest for doing this, but he might win the more important November popularity contest instead.

4. No, because immediate withdrawl would be irresponsible,.
John Kerry's position acknowledges the realities of Iraq and provides a process for resolution and ultimate withdrawl.

...The United Nations, not the United States, should be the primary civilian partner in working with Iraqi leaders to hold elections, restore government services, rebuild the economy, and re-create a sense of hope and optimism among the Iraqi people. The primary responsibility for security must remain with the U.S. military, preferably helped by NATO until we have an Iraqi security force fully prepared to take responsibility.

5. No, but...

he needs to motivate the base as well as appeal to the center.
IF he is going to engage on Iraq at all (and it might be best to
say nothing)... then he needs to describe a plan to provide a
decent (for both us and Iraq) plan to withdraw and it needs to be
something a lot better than "we need to get the UN involved".
The UN is just a small part of it.

I, and a lot of others, don't know what the rest is...
