Air America bounces check -- taken off air in Chicago and LA
From Drudge:

After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious cash-flow problems.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE, on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said, the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million! A charge the network strongly denies... Developing...

8. I Googled "MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting"
... and they don't list either the Chicago or the L.A. stations as part of their network.

So the notion that the problem lies with the previous owners (which I think I saw as Radio Unica) has more resonance to me than the Drudgian they're-out-of-money.

I mean, if Air America was out of money, wouldn't a buncha checks be bouncing?

Also, the blog for the Majority Report claims that Air America's lawyers are in court trying to get an injunction that would force MCRB to put the Chicago/L.A. stations back on the air. If that happens fairly quickly (say, by the end of the day) that would make this yet another petered-out Drudge rumor.

Anything longer than a day and a half, however ...

12. You can have plenty of money and still bounce a check
Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 01:58 PM by Freddie Stubbs
It may have had an error suck as account number or date. It may just be the result of poor book keeping and not having enough money in a particular account.

5. I KNEW
I would find out why it was off air in LA. And all I had 2 do was go 2 DU. Thank the spirits 4 streaming!

Drudge is a pathetic, mediocre novaks wannabe.

6. Very skeptical
From what I've read, Air America has over $30 million to cover them for the next few years. They didn't even expect to make a profit for three years, and they're already very highly rated on Internet streaming alone. This sounds like typical right wing bullshit to me.

Given the long Drudge track record of bias, distortion, fantasy and outright lies I'll wait for the other side of the story thank you.

16. it may have been a purposeful move by AA
to stop payment on money if these radio stations were in bankruptcy and didn't disclose certain debts, etc.

19. They stopped payment on the check
because the other company tried to swindle them. They will pay when the mess is cleared up and the correct amount owed is known. AA's COO was just on the Randi Rhodes show

20. Randi Rhodes just explained
She had a lawyer for AA just on who said that:

First of all, AA never bounced a check. They had paid what they owed and it was the owner of Multi cultural broadcasting that had actually stole money from them.

Said this was just a shakedown from people trying to silence them.

Said that they will be going to court to seek an injunction to get AA back on the air while the dispute is settled.

21. DU shouldn't be a drudge echo chamber - thread title offensive, untrue
maybe next time you should start with "Drudge sez" - or better yet - don't quote the liar. A few months ago he was spewing RNC lies about Clark - same day as Gillespie - and it took some time to clear the air here. Not the same sewer is sliming Air America - and his titles go....very disappointing.

22. I believe AAR's version of events. No matter what.

I mean, sure we are only hearing AAR's version of events on
their station, but what the heck. Their lawyer simply MUST be
telling the truth, right?

I want people to imagine the following:

General Electric sues XYZ corporation. NBC (owned by GE)
starts reporting on the suit, only interviews GE people and
attorneys and only speak about how XYZ is horrible and how GE
is saintly.

Now, you'd be screaming about "corporation media"
and "bias" and "not getting the whole
story". You'd also not believe a lick of it.

But AAR's version of events? Swallowed whole, no critical
thought, no analysis, no "Hey, maybe they are just
accentuating their own case and glossing over any part of
this that might make them look bad."

I'm not saying AAR's 100% full of it, I'm not saying this Leu
(sp?) guy is spotless and pure as snow. I am saying that it
is really ironic that people who listen to AAR claim the are
sick of monolithic, biased media giving only one side of the
story....and then proceed to listen to one side of the story and
decided "This is fact, anything to the contrary being a
lie."
