Bush stands firm on Iraq, as Iran says it's been called on to help
BAGHDAD : US President George W. Bush has vowed to stay the course in Iraq but in a sign of the strain facing the US-led coalition, Iran said that Washington had appealed for its help to end fierce clashes in the country and a spate of damaging kidnappings.

In a sign that the coalition may be at a loss over how to quell the insurgency, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said Washington had appealed through intermediaries for Tehran's help.
Famously dubbed by Bush part of "an axis of evil" along with North Korea and Iraq, Iran, which is majority Shiite Muslim, may be in a unique position to intercede with rebels led by wanted cleric Moqtada al-Sadr although so far it has kept its distance from him.
"There has been a lot of correspondence. Regarding Iraq, there has also been a lot of exchanges of correspondence," Kharazi told reporters when asked of the current state of relations with the United States.
"Naturally, there was a request for our help in improving the situation in Iraq and solving the crisis, and we are making efforts in this regard," the minister said.
He added that exchanges of written communications between the two continued to be made through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, but stressed there had been no formal communication between the arch enemies which cut off diplomatic ties after the 1979 Islamic revolution.
