LOOKING FOR FIDEL

Running Time: 53 minutes

In May 2003, after a tumultuous period in which the Cuban government cracked down on over 75 dissidents and executed three hijackers, Fidel Castro allowed award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone into his country for a series of candid interviews. The result is a rare, honest and up-close look at Castro at a critical juncture in Cuba's history as the country deals with widespread unrest amidst Castro's return to the heavy-handed tactics that brought him to power back in 1959.

Director(s): OLIVER STONE

2. HBO rejected Stone's Castro documentary, Commadante,
because they thought the portrait of Fidel too positive. Even though he shot this second documentary, which is apparently tough enough on Castro to be acceptable, HBO still won't screen Commadante.

Commadante aired on CBC last month, and is a damn good film. Americans deserve to see it, too. Stone says he believes it's effectively banned in the US for fear that Americans might actually see something in Castro they like.
