Army Extends Tours Despite 1-Year Pledge

WASHINGTON - About 21,000 American soldiers in Iraq (news - web sites) who were to return this month to their home bases in Louisiana and Germany will have their tours extended at least three months to help combat the surge in anti-occupation violence, defense officials said Wednesday.

The decision, which has not been announced publicly, breaks the Army's promise to soldiers and their families that assignments in Iraq would be limited to 12 months. The affected soldiers already have been in Iraq for a year.

3. One of the newsreaders
said the Pentagon issued a statement of some sort to the effect of "We really meant it when we said it", speaking of the year long stints..... there was no further elaboration. Isn't that like breach of contract or something? What a bunch of crap.

10. I have a feeling this is why General
Abzihad?? nor any of the other commanders have asked for more troops before. They knew we didn't have them and they knew where they had to come from - extended tours. The people in this admin are the scum of the earth.

9. I know a couple of people who have family in Iraq
Their loved ones have had their tours extended. Nobody is happy about it...to the point where Bush has lost a couple of votes that I know of. Now multiply times 21,000.

11. Very subtle... I bet the press fails to pick up on it.
This of course means that US troop numbers in Iraq have just been raised by about 21,000.

For those who don't get what I mean, remember that at the moment a rotation is supposed to be happening where troops who have been in Iraq for a year come home, and fresh troops replace them.

I have no doubt that the fresh troops are still going, but we now know at least 21,000 of the ones supposed to be coming back are staying, resulting in an overall increase in forces.

The question is, will the press point this out?
