IL: Which office is more powerful, Governor or Chicago Mayor?
I know Daley has an enormous amount of power, but is he more powerful than the Governor of IL.

1. I would say Daley
He can pull strings on that huge bloc of voters known as Chicagoans. He also pretty much controls the local TV media imho, kind of in the same way as KKKarl Rove influences national media.

I am no fan of rethuglicans, but I would have to say that Daley is the one person that keeps me from declaring full allegiance to the Democratic Party. (I still support Kerry, ABB, so don't get any ideas here.)

2. That's what I thought too......
and I think Daley's actually an OK guy, I liked how he stood with the gay community in Chicago.

6. He has way too much power and he's not afraid to use it
The overnight bulldozing of Meigs Field without any allowance for debate is one example. He may be 'an OK guy,' but there is NO WAY I can trust someone with that kind of power.

I should know because I lived in Chicago for a few years. I remember an editorial from someone who had just came from Florida that said, "We have democracy in Florida. Maybe we should try it here." Chicago has a one-party system that at times can resemble the Mexican PRI.

3. You Have To Ask???
Richard J. Daley once said he'd take his job to King of England.

Richie Daley is one of the most powerful Democrats in the country...with nearly 2 million Democrat votes at his beckon call each election.

Without Richie onboard nothing gets done downstate...not the other way around.

Why do you ask??

5. I was trying to think of a state.....
in which the most powerful official isn't elected statewide. Daley seemed to fit the bill.

9. Another such state is Massachusetts
It's really the House Speaker, not the Governor, who runs the show.

4. The mayor easily
The Daleys can pick the governor; the governor can't pick the mayor. The Daleys can control the legislature; the governor can't.
The Daleys can influence national politics more easily than the governor.

8. Daley controls everything in Illinois
in the past he allowed Republican governors so he'd be the top Democrat. But now he has Blagovevich or whatever him, a total puppet of him. So now everything will go Daley's way. That's why Bush has absolutely no fucking chance whatsoever of winning Illinois or Ryan of winning the senate seat. What Daley wants, Daley gets.
