From “Swatting at flies” to “Blowing up the house”
Let’s say you’ve got a bug problem in your house. You’re getting really irritated, because you swat and swat at them all day long, and they just keep on coming. Every now and then, you get bitten. You’re getting more and more fed up, until you get a really nasty bite that gets infected. So you decide it’s time to do more.

Do you:
A) Spray a top-of-the-line insecticide along the base-boards, in nooks and crannies, and similar places throughout the house?
This is a really strong, heavy-duty chemical that you have been hesitant to use in the past. But now you think it’s worth it to prevent getting bitten again. It quietly but efficiently targets the bugs’ nesting and gathering areas, eliminating the population.

OR

B) Blow up the house, and then your neighbor’s house? This temporarily eliminates bugs at the site (of the explosion), but allows many to scatter and reproduce in the surrounding area. Blowing up the neighbor’s house two doors over scatters what few bugs they had, but creates a very inviting environment for all sorts of other bugs, including some fleeing your house. Pretty soon, your entire neighborhood is infested.

We went from fly-swatter to bombing the neighborhood, when we could have gone from fly-swatter to a good insecticide.

2. interesting analogy
but the missing issue is that the bugs don't sit on huge reserves of crude oil and you wouldn't use other people's money through no-bid contracts to your friends to rebuild your neighbors house

3. Of course! How could I miss that. And I thought I was being so prescient.
