When the Iraqis develop a permanent constitution and gov't
what will happen if this government is hostile to the United States? What will Bu$h do? What if it becomes a Talibanesque theocracy which tramples women's and minorities rights in the name of "God"? Someone should ask this to Bu$h. I'd be interested in his response. Would he simply allow them to create another Taliban? Would he step in (more US casualties)? What would he do, or rather, the way things are going, what is he going to do? And if this becomes Kerry's problem, I'd like to know what he would do as well.

1. The normal procedure when fundamentalist parties
look like winning an election is to ban them. For example, the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was banned in the early 90s in Algeria.

1989 Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) founded
1990 FIS wins 55% in local elections in first free vote
1991 June FIS calls a general strike. Military declares a state of emergency
Nov First armed islamist attack in Guemmar, in the east
Dec FIS comes top, with 47% of vote, in first round of national elections.
1992 Jan-Feb Parliament dissolved by decree, state of emergency continued. Army grabs control
March FIS banned

The article (originally from The Guardian) estimates 100,000 have died in the fighting in the decade since then. Algeria's population is only a little more than Iraq.
