On this date in 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier
in Major League Baseball. It was a momentous day, not only for baseball, but for American society in general. Jackie Robinson showed great courage and class because he was persecuted and constantly harassed his first year or two. Later in his life, Mr. Robinson was a champion for civil rights and appeared with Dr. Martin Luther King from time to time. Cancer robbed this great man of his life too early, but all people, regardless of race, color, or creed should honor Jackie Robinson today and every day.

2. absolutly
forget about the above average stats on the field, Robinson was one of the best ever. He was classy and a great person as well.

On edit I guess I don't want to be misconstrued. Jackie Robinson was a truely great player, a real hero to everyone.

4. That reminds me
of how sad it is that Satchel Page didn't get to face some of the great Yankee teams in the 30s, or Josh Gibson didn't get to bat against major league pitching. We have missed some great games.

5. Thanks to Al Campanis for helping open the door
It would have taken longer without Al.
