FALLUJAH, Iraq ---- The modest brick-and-concrete home in northwest Fallujah belongs to a working-class Iraqi family. But they don't live there right now. Last week, like thousands of other residents of this besieged city, they abandoned their home ---- and all their belongings ---- to escape getting crushed between Iraqi insurgents and American might.
The now bullet-ridden structure has new occupants: A platoon of Marine infantrymen who have scoured the cupboards and drawers for anything useful and who have converted the home into a defensible base while they hunker down and await a break in a 4-day-old cease-fire.
Between 100,000 and 200,000 people fled Fallujah last week after Marines surrounded the city and battled insurgents in the industrial slums and underdog neighborhoods at the city's edges.
Now, with a cease-fire in effect, troops of the Camp Pendleton-based 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment used an additional day of peace Wednesday to fortify the homes until the troops are free to pursue the insurgents into the city....
