"The Peter Syndrome". It appears we have reached a very high level of
"Peters/Peterettes" in America. Its called the PETER PRINCIPLE. While this Syndrome will always exist, its the level which is crucial to a given Society.

I suspect our level has reached a point where great damage is being done. Our Head Peter, W Bush is the Prime Example of a Peter. He personifies the Term. (sorry to all the PEOPLE NAMED Peter out there but someone else coined that phrase)

How is it we Americans, so smart as we are, let this Peter in there?

Could it be the level is such they all joined up to get the Ultimate Peter in there to look good too? Peters of a feather flock together thing?

2. It'sbeen a long time since I heard that phrase.
Refresh my memory...something about rising to one's level of incompetence?

5. It was a book written in the late 60s or early 70s by Dr. Lawrence T Peter
(not exactly sure about the middle intitial). The basic premise is that 'everyone is promoted to their own level of incompetence'.

Which makes me think that there's one fatal flaw in this principal. George W. Bush* has screwed up everything he ever touched. Does this mean that some people can achieve this dubious distinction just by being born?

6. yep-- the Peter Principle...
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 04:04 PM by mike_c
...is that as organizations reward people for good performance, they eventually rise to levels where their performance begins to break down, i.e. their "level of incompetence."

I'd argue that this is not necessarily responsible for most of what we're seeing in the Bush administration (excepting Condi Rice, possibly). Rather, I think some of the Bushco people are quite competent in their high offices, but simply bent upon causing as much damage and destruction as they can. Cheney, for example. Others, such as dumbya himself and Rumsfeld, were appointed to posts FAR in excess of their levels of incompetence and that the Peter Principle had nothing to do with their achieving them.

11. A nexus of forces may be at play.
I remember my college Western Civ instructor describing the convergence of forces and other phenomena that informed the careers of the most famous--and infamous--leaders in the history of the western world.

Of course, everything is the result of a nexus of forces but, once in a while, it all comes together to produce an Alexander the Great, a Julius Ceasar, an Adolph Hitler, a George W. Bush.

4. I think you misunderstand the peter principal...
Which is, people tend to be promoted one level beyond their ability.

IMO, Bush wasnt even qualified to be Governor.

9. Dumbya never had a level of competency to be promoted to
a level of incompetence according to the Peter Principle. I think he's what we would call "born with a silver spoon in his mouth". He is the clueless, self-centered, self-indulgent, idiot heir to the family fortune, who had everything handed to him, never had to work hard at anything yet in the end gets everything he doesn't deserve.
