Yeh, yeh, I know. He wasn't really elected--what with all the chadhung ballots and the invalidated Gore write-in votes and the people bumped off the Florida voting rolls because they had the same names as convicts. I'm outraged by all that. But like most Democrats I have this dominant "fairness" gene in me that keeps on wondering "What if the shoe were on the other foot?"

Even if I don't respect the man, I have to respect the office. The president is someone who speaks for all the people, even if he's a guy who can hardly even speak a coherent sentence off the cuff. No one would be more please than me to see Bush wearing "Leavenworth Federal Inmate number 99999999"--but until that day comes (or at least until there's an election they can't rig) he's still the president.

If I were to meet him in person, I couldn't just say "Hey you, you're a fucking crooked asshole" because he represents the people and the country that I love. Instead, I would have to say "Excuse me, Mr President, but you're a crooked asshole, sir." Because I'm a patriot first.
