Imminent Threat? Here it Comes...right on schedule-
Report Suggests Terror Operatives ‘In Place,’ Possibly in America

By Pierre Thomas

W A S H I N G T O N, April 18 — U.S. intelligence officials have uncovered evidence of a potential terrorist attack, ABCNEWS has learned.

Like many such tips, it is vague, but the government is disturbed enough that it held a rare conference call with local police to warn them.

The intelligence, received a week ago but secret until now, is from known Muslim extremists who suggested an attack — possibly in the U.S. — was imminent, and that operatives were already "in place," sources tell ABCNEWS.

"I think it's very clear from what we're seeing right now is that the bad guys, the al Qaeda, is getting very creative, that they are active and that they are going to continue to try and hit us," said Jerry Hauer, a former emergency management official and now an ABCNEWS consultant.

On the Lookout

The primary area of concern is so-called soft targets. Police were told to be on the lookout for surveillance of landmarks, and for suspicious items left in malls, subway stations or other large gatherings.

On Friday, April 9, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security held a rare secure conference call with police in dozens of major cities.

By Saturday, April 10, a classified bulletin was sent out warning that groups affiliated with al Qaeda might be planning attacks in the U.S. on the scale seen in Madrid last month.

1. Surveillance of landmarks?
So silly.

Isn't the idea of a landmark that people will be milling about, taking pictures, etc?

And besides, if this were true, then announcing it is the wrong thing to do.

Sure they may break off THIS operation, but we lose the chance to catch them.

So silly to use this sort of thing as a tool to get people to look the other way.

And yet so many fall for it.

Sheesh.

U.S. bracing for terror before election

WASHINGTON -- The United States is bracing for possible terrorist attacks before the November presidential election, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said Sunday.

The opportunity for terrorists to try to influence the election, as was the case last month in Spain, appears to be an opportunity that would "be too good to pass up for them," Rice said.

By ANDY WILKS

KEVIN Spacey was attacked by a mugger in a London park, it was revealed yesterday.

The Hollywood star suffered a minor head injury.

Spacey, 44, walked into a nearby police station at 5am and told how the thief stole his mobile phone as he was walking his dog half an hour earlier.

But hours later he withdrew the allegation. The actor, who won Oscars for The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, said he was assaulted near his home in Kennington, South London.

8. I think the translation
is Arabic for "the foundation"... making the loose translation

"base" also correct.

11. "Cry Wolf!"
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 12:14 AM by TahitiNut
One of the characteristics of every al-Qaeda attack thus far, with some doubt that the Madrid train was actually al-Qaeda, is the remarkably low loss of lives of children and the elderly. Thus, whenever I hear one of these 'alerts' where emphasis is on malls, sports stadia, or tourist venues, I'm VERY suspicious. Every target has had some opressive symbolism - especially the WTC, a venue almost solely devoted to the ownership/financing of oppressive global corporations. I just don't buy the idea, for example, that the Statue of (our former) Liberty would be a primary target. Al-Qaeda at least claims a passionate desire for the liberties of their own people. No, I think symbolic targets would include Wall Street and stock exchanges, oil refineries, military bases, federal buildings, and other targets symbolic of oppression.

Despite all the dehumanizing rhetoric, these people have an objective ... and their targets have been consistent with that objective.

15. I don't believe any of them anymore. I really think they are
trying to keep Americans afraid of the boogy man.

There's no way to prove something didn't happen and it sure seems to be working on a lot of people!
