In the Crossfire… is it time to bring back the draft? One prominent U.S. Senator suggests that it might be one option in light of continued violence in Iraq and the need to fulfill all of the other U.S. military commitments around the globe. While Secretary Rumsfeld says he's ready to send more troops if he's told they're needed, the Pentagon is already telling 20,000 soldiers in Iraq to get comfortable: their missions are being extended. But critics suggest the forces in Iraq are already spread too thin and some are in serious need of relief.
Is the voluntary service large enough for the missions at hand? Are U.S. troops spread too thin? Would sending more troops to Iraq sacrifice security elsewhere? Are the lower and middle classes bearing too much of the burden? Would mandatory service change the way Americans feel about the war in Iraq and where they are willing to send troops in the future? Could America stomach another draft?
