Do you guys consider what we do here at DU a political activity?
It's that time of year at my job where we have to go thru a code of ethics booklet, sign off on it and return it. The bullet in question is:

"We do not use company time or resources--including telephones, email, faxes, and photocopying machines-- for personal politicial activitites."

I post messages on DU while at work when my work is slow. I know it is my decision to stop posting but I wanted to get your opinions, if any. Should I stop posting and just read and wait until I get home to post? I don't know if I can stand it, though.

1. "Personal political activities"..
sounds like some form of campaigning to me.

Hmm..I suppose if they didn't want you to surf DU while at work they would give you some sort of warning?

Unless you're running for office...
or actively campaigning for someone while you're here I wouldn't sweat it. However, if you work for a corporation, be careful.

3. If you post

4. I did notice they didn't include internet activity in the bullet.
Imo, if they don't want it's employees surfing the internet, then why load it on everyone's pc? I've always thought about that.

5. To me
personal political activities would be campaigning for yourself or someone else using company property.

You're safe

9. I would, but I figure they would monitor me since I brought it up.
I don't want to bring attention to it.

7. Read at work, post from home
might be a good policy. And reading only on lunch and a couple of breaks might be a good idea. It is tempting to post though.

But you need to decide for yourself too.

8. Be careful. It's very easy for your Co. to monitor your
internet activity. I know, I used to do it!

I would be VERY careful about going to political sites while at work since they obviously consider this an ethics issue.

You can split hairs and say the internet isn't mentioned, and you probably could get away with it if your politics was aligned with that of your Company. If it's not..........there's a problem.

We'll still pay attention to you at night. It's not worth losing your job.

10. I've been with the company over 20 years and it's a very large
corporation. I figure they would give me a warning before they would fire me for posting innocent messages on a message board. I know for a fact they did it to some guy that was watching porn (the moron worked the late shift). They gave him a warning first or they would fire him. He did take the warning.

12. It all depends on the Company.
Some gie warnings, some get a wild hair and choose to make an example. You know the people you work for. I just wanted you to realize that they can decide they don't like this.

For what it's worth, I worked for a Co. for 14 years, and somebody came up with the idea that it would save money if they didn't have these more experienced and more expensive workers around. I was in SC at the time and in a right to work state, they just tell you we don't need you any more.

I hope life is better for you.

15. In that case
they must have an official policy on internet use, that is, are you or are you not allowed to surf the internet when it's slow and you want to take a little break. If so, you might as well just ask them if DU is ok under the political rules...

11. No, not unless you are one of the few, the proud,
the participants in the "activism and events" forum. Otherwise it's a site for education and socializing (the lounge and meeting room are infrequently political).

14. As a paralegal, I personally would be very careful of any website I might
access. I consider none of my email private nor do I access any non-business related web sites. I consider everything I do or look at on my business computer to be subject to monitoring. Even if I am just reading DU that can be tracked. Also remember, it is not our opinions it is their definitions. They own the the computers and the peripherals, they get to dictate how they can be used.
