Oklahoma becomes the fifth state to put a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot this year, after the state House voted 92-4 Thursday to approve the measure, which GLBT activists condemned.

If the proposed amendment passes, marriages of same-sex couples conducted in other states would not be recognized in Oklahoma, and knowingly issuing a marriage license to gay couples would be a misdemeanor.

"This is a proud day for the people of Oklahoma," said Senate Republican leader James Williamson, the author of the proposal.

The Oklahoma Senate had already passed the bill last week, also with an overwhelming majority, despite an Oklahoma law on the books that already prohibits lesbians and gays from marrying. It is now the responsibility of the secretary of state to put the initiative on the general election ballot.

1. Unsophisticated Okies
When I hear stories about state legislatures voting 92-4 to deny gay equality, it's really difficult not to think of Okies as the same kind of ignorant shit-kickers that live in Texas. I realize that not everybody in Oklahoma or Texas is an asshole, but there's that 92-4 number staring me in the face.

It's less than ninety-nine and forty-four one-hundredths percent, but it's still pretty high.

2. It's EXTREMELY hard to pass a Constitutional amendment.
The states have to vote on it and I don't remember how many states have to vote for it to become law. First enough people have to care in all the states to even put it on the ballot. Then enough people have to care to vote for passage against those who are going to vote against it. These same idiots have been trying for decades to get enough people hot under the collar to get desecrating the flag a crime in the Constitution. A whole lot more people care about that then if gays marry or not.

the amendment has to pass 2/3rds of BOTH houses of congress, then be approved by the LEGISLATURES of 3/4th of the states. This particular amendment will never make it out of the Senate.

U will notice squatter no longer preaches on it. I think it is not THE wedge issue they wanted. Saurov thought it would B huge but it just fizzeled out.

Of course Oklahoma legislators voted that way - they're not leaders, they're rethugs!

State "ratifying conventions" also count. I don't remember exactly what that is, though.

4. Federal Amendment is surely a no go
Because it would need a 2/3 majority in the House and Senate and it's questionable whether or not it would pass the House and virtually guaranteed that it would NOT make it through the Senate. And that's just to get it through Congress. If a popular piece of legislation like the flag burning amendment couldn't get the 2/3 required for the past ten YEARS, there's no way this would pass.

9. With vote tallies such as 92-4 that clearly means
some DEMOCRATS voted to support discrimination of the GLBTQ community.

So, how exactly are Democrats different from pugs? This is a question I am sure many in the GLBTQ community will ask once they begin looking at how "leaders" vote on this issue.

Article VI :

16. Except for Bush's Constitutional Amendment. I think it will pass, sadly.
Though with any luck it will go the way of the Flag-Burning Amendment. But be assured, if they want to push it, it will pass Congress and ratification will go through.

23. If states begin enacting these bans then I would support a boycott
of that state and its products. IMHO what should be done is an analysis of the states with bans and then one or two states with the most to lose should be targeted behind a massive campaign for the boycott.

Bringing them to their knees economically ought to bring them around.
