it's pretty much the same in Australia with our Rush Limburgh / Sean Hanity copycat shock jocks...
cast :
Alan Jones .. millionaire radio shock jock.. similar to Rush Limburgh
David Flint..Chairman ABA (Aust Broadcasting Association)..statutory body whose role is to ensure diversity in the media..role similar to Michael Powell.
John Howard.. Prime Minister..similar to Tony Blair ( ie George Bush's No 2 poodle)
John Laws..reputedly world's highest paid shock jock..similar to Sean Hannity.
The Story so far:
John Laws has accused rival broadcaster Alan Jones of telling him in 2000 at a dinner party that he had "visited John Howard at Kirribilli (PM's splendiferous Sydney residence)and ordered him to re-appoint (the effete and pompous) David Flint as ABA Chairman or lose his support on radio ".
Other ABA board members are threatening to resign en masse due to Flint's perceived continuing partisan conservative politics and their loss of trust in his approach to his role as Chairman.
ie : (1) as ABA Chairman he has publicly advocated that Rupert Murdoch should have greater control of Australia's media ( he already controls 70% of daily newspapers)
(2)written letters of support on ABA note paper praising Alan Jones and his conservative politics and questioning why Jones should have been investigated in 1999 during a 'Cash For Comment' scandal when it was discovered corporations were paying Jones $$millions for favorable comment contrary to ABA rules..an enquiry Flint was required to chair but ultimately had to step aside from.
Alan Jones other brush with scandal was in 1994 when he was arrested in a London toilet block for "importuning a policeman to commit an indecent act".
A close friend of then UK PM Margaret Thatcher, the charges were eventually dropped.
John Howard and Alan Jones have both denying they spoke about David Flint's appointment.
when freepers fall out with each other..the fur flies !!
