SNIP..."Katherine Harris booed at Bradenton town hall meeting

The Associated Press
BRADENTON, Fla.
U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, who gained the national spotlight as Florida secretary of state during the 2000 presidential recount, was booed several times at a town hall meeting about the Medicaid prescription drug plan being considered by Congress.

Hundreds of people showed up with detailed questions for Harris at the Bradenton Kiwanis Hall Thursday night. The Sarasota Republican spoke for nearly half of the allotted hour, and then didn't answer the crowd's questions until all had been asked, the Bradenton Herald reported in Friday's edition.

The lines at the microphones were long. The boos were loud.

The crowd's mood already was testy before the meeting began. Security guards and Harris' staff confiscated literature handed out by opponents that included the drug plan's details and a chart of Harris' voting record since she began her term in January....."END SNIP

The article says "ethics" rules would not allow the AARP to distribute their material. But Harris could distribute hers. Is this correct?

1. One of the GOP's biggest fears
Is if the AARP ever stops being "non partisan" and starts ripping the GOP plans for the elderly.

Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 10:26 AM by ewagner
Did the good people of Bradenton just wake up and find out who/what this lady really is?

Ethics rules? whose rules were they ?

on edit: Congressional rules for town hall meetings? Am I missing something here?

18. Washington culture had nothing to do with it.
She's from a wealthy Florida family and owes her position to money, connections, political stance, and a GOP-leaning district.

7. "ethics" horseshit!

Unless the flyers said "Dump Harris" or "Vote Democratic," they fell well within the parameters of House ethics guidelines.

Katherine Harris: a defender of the First Amendment, unless it's exercised against her.

8. Her staffer must have decided on the confiscation of AARP fliers.
SNIP......"Connie M. McKee, a Harris staffer, said Congressional ethics rules made it illegal for people to distribute political information during a town hall meeting.

"All of the material is still here and they can pick it up when they leave," McKee said. "They just can't take it into the hall. The ethics laws do not allow us to let them take it in. We have to be very, very careful that there are no laws broken."

Note the words "political information". I don't consider the AARP fliers as being political.

12. if you`re over 50
you can join the aarp, most don`t because they don`t think they need it..little do they know....what really pisses me off is that when these thugs put out this crap and do this kind of stuff they assume that the elderly are stupid and don`t understand anything.they treat elderly people like they`re children.. well there`s alot of us "children" that are going to be really pissed when we start to retire. if the repubilcans aren`t stopped now this country will be in chaos in 8 to 10 years from now..

19. More about Dear Kate, as Palast calls her.

SNIP....."Five years after problems surfaced regarding the management of their late father's trust, the five children of citrus magnate Ben Hill Griffin Jr. reached a settlement Wednesday that divides the multimillion-dollar estate.

The settlement, approved by Polk Circuit Judge Michael Hunter, ends a legal saga that first pitted the four sisters against their only brother, Ben Hill Griffin III, then found three of the sisters at odds with the fourth....."

MORE:...."The sibling spat saw U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Sarasota, daughter of Harriet Harris, and state Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, son of Sarah Jane Alexander, pitted against one another in court...."

There is also a cousin, a state legislator, named Troutman. Don't know where he fits in this case.

23. Oooh! Great article from the Bradenton Herald.
Harris' brevity angers residents

http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradentonherald/6484357.htm

SNIP...."Harris told attendees she wanted all questions asked first before she answered.

The lines at the microphones were long.

The boos were loud.

"We want our answers now," a man in the back of the room shouted.

She said, "Doing it this way will allow more people to speak."

Harris' logic didn't sit well with the standing-room-only crowd...."

25. Thanks for the link to the article.
It sounds as though she's taken all her moves from the Bush II playbook -- control, choreograph, stifle, and be petulant.

Wouldn't it be utterly delicious if she got voted out? One can only hope...
