Canadians Take Fright At Fox News Channel
Canadians have it right!

http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=ed81acbf0e875aac

snip

Fox earlier this year applied to televise their popular Fox News Channel throughout Canada. The commission turned them down earlier this month.

snip

The channel is a devout Bush administration fan and employs commentators that fall into the Republican line. It is said to be so biased it has to tell viewers that it is 'fair and balanced', that it is the channel, 'America can trust', and says repeatedly, 'we report, you decide.' Others say it is as close to a state-run news service as you can get. Canada, in any event, says it won't have a bar of it. But Fox News is to apply again.

3. hardly "the press"...

I guess they can make up their own rules in Canada. If they don't want it, then they don't have to have it.

7. They are NOT the press
They are liars whose sole purpose is to disseminate virulent propaganda. They slant what little news they report beyoned recognition. Their stock in trade is to take a half truth, embelllish it with loaded language, and twist it into a total lie.

Canada was smart not to allow a propaganda outlet onto its service. If they continue to be smart, they'll continue to rebuff that Nazi Murdoch and the horse he rode in on.

25. I have no problem with the fact that they EXIST..
I just want them to display a permanent "banner" that identifies them as what they are.. Republican sponsored media venue..

That way when people stumble upon them. they know what they really are..

what media networks have to be allowed. Remember this is Canada not America. Not all the same rules apply.

31. Errr....
Ok.... Canada let in MSNBC (blech) and CNN (blech). They decided they don't want Fox News. Part of that, I believe, is because of the strict Canadian content laws the CRTC has set up. That and programming has to contain at least 1 news segment per alotted time. (Kay, that was snarky)
Anyway, just look at it this way, in this case, its a group of people deciding based on guidelines decided upon by the public. Down in the US, news stations are decided upon by the, what, two people who own all the rest of them?

ok I rambled, sorry.

Canadian....Why she would want to say such a dumb thing...Please don't use my last name because I don't want the government to know that I'm illegally watching Fox on the satellite. You see, we're allowed to hear only what they want us to hear.'...Poor little girl...I hope the big bad Mounties don't come and drag her off to some place like Guantanimo Bay...Oh I forgot, we don't have any place like that.....LOL
On edit....I was just thinking...Before Bush became president, our countries were on very friendly terms...Americans liked us and we liked Americans...Now there's all this hate flowing from those who think the Iraq war is a good idea...It's really sad..

From Donna in Toronto:
'We need fair and balanced news from Fox because The Globe and Mail and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation are so far left. The CBC is called by many the Communist Broadcasting Corporation. Please don't use my last name because I don't want the government to know that I'm illegally watching Fox on the satellite. You see, we're allowed to hear only what they want us to hear.'

19. Where does this idea that The Globe and Mail is left wing come from?
Edited on Thu Apr-29-04 07:47 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
The guy next to me at work calls it 'a communist rag'. So far as I can tell, it's dead centre. This left-wing media myth the Canadian right perpetuates seems to turn a blind-eye to Global, The National Post, Southam, CTV and all the other right-wing media outlets. Nationally, the only established media that is not right-wing is the CBC and the Globe.

23. I agree....The Globe & Mail is not left wing...that's just silly
Actually, I think we have a pretty good representation of all political points of view in our media...So far at least...Even the right-wing, Bush-supporting Toronto Sun has printed every column Eric Margolis has written, with all his extremely anti-Bush rants....And for those who say the CBC is way left, I could not disagree more...They have often peeved me because they try to be balanced in their reporting and show the opinions of "the other side."....It sometimes peeves me because I see nothing but "the other side" on American TV news....As long as we don't vote Stephen Harper and his nuts in as government, we'll be O.K....And I can't see them EVER getting elected to govern....:)

5. Fox news should have its license revoked
in the USA for pretending to be a cable news channel, instead of a propaganda channel.

If Fox puts a logo always on screen that says "Official channel of the Bush administration" that would be sufficient.

16. Regarding the last letter;

for his information, The United States invaded Canada
during the Revolutionary War and during the War of 1812,
and in both instances the British and the Canadians handed
our (USA's) butts to us.

Damn Freepers, it's one thing to have an opinion,
and another to be an ignorant idiot and be PROUD
of that fact.

26. Apathy ;"blame this administration"; "I didn't vote for him" bla bla bla
Thanks America -- as of today, Saddam is now looking like a saint by most standards. The "ceasefire/massacre" in Fallujah; the rape and torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib and other prisons in Iraq. Only "God/Bush" knows whats going on in Guantonamo Bay???

While 50% of Americans sponsor these activities, the other 50% are content to blame "this Administration". At some point we have to ask ourselves -- Is attributing blame really enough?

21. From Thursday's Globe and Mail:
And the laugh was still there
John Doyle, well into his allotted 15 minutes south of the border, went toe-to-toe with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly and his ilk. Now he finds himself swamped with notes from sympathetic Americans who are frankly embarrassed for some of their countrymen

I think Fox News Channel is comically overheated with its wailing about "left-wingers" and "elites." I also think O'Reilly is nothing more than an intolerant windbag, what the Irish astutely call a gobshite.

If somebody wants to make the Fox News Channel available in Canada, fine. Believe me, if you thought Dan Rather's occasional outbursts of jittery, googly-eyed American jingoism were comical, you haven't seen anything yet. O'Reilly makes our Ed the Sock look like a reasonable chap.

...

Bill O'Reilly is now obsessed with Canada for several reasons. First, he's stung by the realization that Canadians might laugh at his aggressiveness. Second, The Times piece about the abusive letters revealed that many of his supporters are foul-mouthed fanatics. Third, Canada represents an irritating calmness and assuredness at a time when the American culture is in crisis. To paraphrase W. B. Yeats (an Irish writer who the American-Irish O'Reilly should acquaint himself with), our hearts have not grown brutal from the fray.

...

From the volume of apologetic mail I've received, it seems certain that the generous, humorous spirit of the United States is not dead and has not been lost. The shrill minority of the lunatic fringe that follows and supports Fox News has merely temporarily shouted it down. Bring Fox News here by all means, and let's have a laugh. Americans can learn from that.
